I have a feeling this is going to be a bit of a grit for you than anything fun for the time being. Hello, /div/. I know we don't have discussions much anymore, and that's a shame. Anyway, I wanted to mention something somewhat divination-related.

The 13th of June is Saint Anthony's Day, and the day before is celebrated in Brazil as a romantic holiday, much like many countries celebrate the 14th of February. One way in which it differs is the performance of rituals called “simpatias,” which are most often performed by single women to find love. Most of them involve some form of folk magic or saint humiliation to attract love, but there are a few rituals that are truly examples of divination.

To determine the initial of her future husband's name, the woman takes a white bowl that has never been used and a new white candle and drips into the bowl the amount of drops corresponding to her age.

If you have access to a banana tree, you can perform a simpatia which involves stabbing the trunk of the tree and coming back the next morning to see the initial of your future lover when you remove it. Another form of dendromancy involves putting a branch of basil that has been thrown on the fire on the roof and checking it the next morning to determine relative age of a future spouse.

One practice involves putting two pieces of coal in a bowl of water and seeing which one floats up first. If the one that was put in first comes up first, it signals love in the coming year. If the one that was put in second comes up first, it signals that love will not come until later years.

There is a practice similar to acultomancy involving two needles and two sugar spoons in a bowl of water, then reading the distance between the objects. I confess I didn't understand that one terribly well, myself. This ritual is supposed to be performed on St John's Day, which is the 24th of June.

Another ritual traditionally performed on the 23rd to 24th involves a bowl filled with holy water and paper.
