Yeah. Essentially everyone knew that the capsule had no chance including him, but they basically didnt care as long as they could say a man had been to space.
There are stories from HAM radio operators of overhearing soviet com traffic, just hurling dudes off into space, no rentry plan at all, just tossing them off into the cosmos just to see if a man could even survive the forces of takeoff. Not telling them this until they were already in orbit.
