Alien checking in as the best classic horror movie.
>>

Fuck, not dropbox. Just a list of reccomended movies.
>>
A rough list of my all-time faves (though I might miss one here or there) include:

The Thing.

Rec.

VHS1.

The Orphanage.

The Babadook.

Alien.

10 Cloverfield Lane (yes, the ending is retarded, but it's basically a good psychological thriller with horror elements if you just stop it 10 minutes before the ending).

Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer.

Mulholland Drive (IDK if it's really horror but it's /x/-ish and pretty unsettling).

The Ring.

> I'll also tell you some horror movies that people say are good but aren't

It follows. It has like one good scene, where the tall guy walks in through the door, it's totally un-scary other than that.

The Witch. It's a good movie in certain respects but the scare factor is so low I can't recommend it to a horror fan. The ending is also a joke.

Anything before 1970. The fact is, horror is part art, part science. The art of scaring people objectively improves with time, and the fact is, yesterday's scares usually suck. Occasionally you'll find some movies that are ahead of their time, like The Thing or Alien, but honestly, before 1970, there's nothing scary, period. I always roll my eyes when some fedora tries to unironically say Nosferatu is a good movie.

Youve got to let go and embrace the films unique style my friend. Only unintelligent casuals dislike the classic films of the horror genre, as it takes an aethistic uncompromised mind to appreciate true art

That's one way to have your opinion immediately discarded.

Lets see, friday the 13th, scream 1,2,3,4, a nightmare on elm street, child's play 1, 2 and (3 was alright not good), then there's also nosferatu vampyre of the night, halloween and the original Dracula. These are all good movies.

One of my friends has seen and loved Rec, The Woman in Black, all that sort of scary film. He loved Woman in Black because of how it built up tension and had some scenes that were pants-shittingly scary for him.

Are there any films that are similar in terms of feel?

So OP has been watching this documentary called "The Nightmare" on netflix and its about sleep paralysis. I've been interested in sleep paralysis/lucid dreaming. The documentary i assume hollywoods the actual experiences.

So, what are your experiences in sleep paralysis, how does it get triggered? Or how could you induce lucid dreaming the most efficient way? General dream thread.

I trust your opinion.

Babadook, It follows and The Witch are the 3 big modern horror movies everyone on /tv/ talks about yet Babadook (the only good one out of the three) gets the most hate. Also The Thing is your first choice, which is the greatest horror movie other than The Shining.

If movies actually scare you, I dunno, you're either five, or a complete nervous wreck. Film simply is not well suited for much more than cheap jump scares, and gore (which is meant to disgust, rather than scare anyway). There are a few (very few, and debatable at that) exceptions, but if you want scary, read a book. A movie will never be able to get under your skin, and fuck with your head like a book can.

No, Nosferatu was not scary. What it was was atmospheric as fuck, and very creepy. The special effects were completely amazing considering that Murnau was basically pioneering the very concept of special effects as he went. Not just with Nosferatu, but Faust as well. Both films have effects that people still can't figure out, and reproduce, all these years later.

I miss mom and pop video stores. Sure, new releases were often very hard to get for months after they were released, but there was just something magical about those places, and as long as it didn't come from behind the beaded curtain, they generally didn't give a shit what kids rented. They seemed to have a much better selection of older titles too than Blockbuster. I mean blockbuster had more titles overall, but far less hidden gems. Movie Gallery did come somewhat closer to recapturing that mom and pop feel than Blockbuster though.

It's good for movie night with a girlfriend. The only thing I seem to remember about watching it was that me and my girlfriend turned it off about halfway in and made a dash for the bed. There were lots of chick-horror movies that ended like that.

I will say though, she wasn't squeamish about horror movies. She liked stuff like that, but she also didn't mind watching shit like the August Underground movies either.

The Boy, Hush, Babadook... from the recent horror movies Ive watched, those were very good. I think it was partly because I had very low expectation for them, since they have cliche premises... which means they are good movies to watch NOW. People are starting to think outside the box and you can see it in those movies. I'm excited for the future of horror movies. But if thats true, those movies can lose their charm as time pass by, like happened to, say, Amityville.

Hush knew how to build tension and had a very empathetic main character, while The Boy had some very good plot twists. Babadook is highly psychological and as such, a hit-or-miss, and the only one between those three with potential to be a "classic", I think.

It was well worth a watch in theaters, so I think it's worth a buck on Blu-Ray. James Wan has been the modern master of horror since 2002, which is both a good and a bad thing. I really hate the Saw franchise, but his other work has been pretty good.

Creepshow 2 is really good, but if you haven't already, do yourself a favor and watch the first one.

Also check out the old Tales from the Darkside tv show. Originally Romero was trying to get a Creepshow TV series going. It never officially happened, due to legal concerns surrounding ownership of the franchise. According to Tom Savini though it very much should be considered to be Creepshow: The Series. It came directly as a result of the effort to make that series, and pretty much all the talent behind Creepshow contributed to Tales From The Darkside at some point or another, over the course of it's run.

It is a little different though. The stories are still heavily inspired by the old EC Comics, just as Creepshow was. Unlike Creepshow though, it doesn't feature the comic-book panels and artwork, or any sort of mascot/host. Also the gore had to be toned way down since it was a syndicated television show. Tales From Crypt was more like Creepshow in that sense, and it's very much worth checking out too. In fact it's very hard for me to say which was the better of the two, because both were great.

Yes, I like both of those too. Cat's Eye was one of those I kind of grew up with. Well I guess Creepshow, and Tales From the Darkside were too.

I was in my teens when Tales From the Crypt came out, but I was hooked immediately. I'd read some of the old comics before that, and really loved them. I thought the show really did them justice too. I enjoyed Demon Night quite a lot, and Bordello of Blood, while not really that good, was still kind of entertaining. I wish HBO would bring the series back.

Ray Bradbury Theater and Monsters were pretty cool too. I've always been a big fan of Bradbury, and really that show was what got me into reading his work later on. He's probably one of my favorite authors.

>The novel ghoul by Brian Keene was much better though not by a whole lot more.

I'd meant to check that out, I just haven't had much time to read in quite a while now. So it's not very good? From what I've seen of Keene's work, I like him.

Have you read The Rising? It was pretty damn entertaining. As done to death as zombies have become in the last few years, you hardly ever see any Return of the Living Dead style zombies. Which is a shame too, because they are really fun. The Rising though used that type of zombies combined with the Evil Dead (and the gut-wrenching brutality of Fulci too), and I found it to be a really enjoyable change of pace.

The sequel wasn't bad (not as awesome either), but the ending really blew. It was a total fucking cop-out. I kind of knew something like it was coming though, because it's apparent that Keene kind of wrote himself into a corner early on. There's also a third one, that an anthology of short stories taking place during the initial outbreak, and it is pretty good. I highly recommend the series to anyone who likes zombies.

Start from the middle. Pick a sub genre/type, choose vintage (black dot, made pre-1990) or modern (white dot, post 1990), then pick in English (black box) or Foreign (white box).

>>

I have, I didn't feel like it compared to the second one, honestly.

Also, I've watched all episodes of Tales from the Darkside. Tales from the Crypt seemed somewhat lame and I did not seem to enjoy it but a few tales. I couldn't take it as seriously. For now, I'm going to watch all of Monsters (1988).

Somewhat off-tangent but I enjoy some shows with ghost documentaries such as Paranormal Witness, My Haunted House, and Haunting. Even if some of them seem lame.

Also, Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction is pretty cool despite only one source (Robert Tralins) is used for the true stories.

I mean if you like Keene's other work youll probably like Ghoul. I read alot of his other stuff, Dark Hollow, Earthworm Gods, Urban Gothic, The Rising, The Cage, Darkness On the Edge of Town, and alot more. They all seem to have an interesting premise, just always somehow manage to fall short of my expectations. Ghoul isnt a very long read, but its okay. Something different.

I prefer Laymon, Ketchum, Barker, Morell(who isnt really horror author but has some damn good suspensful short stories) and Lovecraft

This fucking line of thought is what's killing the genre.
Horror movies don't always need to be 'scary' to be a good horror movie. Not every horror movie is there to make you jump, and judging a movie's quality by if it 'scared' you or not completely ignores all the other aspects.

You can say old movies are good but are they scary? nah haha the exorcist was scary when it came out but would that scare anyone from this generation? noooope
>>
>>17787781
How was it fake, though? If I remember it well, [SPOILERS] It was open for interpretation either it was only her getting insane and then learning to live with it (which isn't "fake" at all. Not being able to tell if something is real is scary af imo) or if she actually tamed and fucking domesticated some sort of demon that gets its strenght from desbelief+negative emotions.
But as I said, it'd a hit or miss. Doesn't make the movie bad, just means it's not for everyone

I want exorcism / posession movies. Religious theme is necessary, not just a movie where someone gets turnt spoopy and murders folks, has to incorporate religion. Not necessarily christianity, but that seems to be all there is...

I thought Shelter was better than it was given credit for when it came out and took the trope to some interesting places. No idea why they changed the name 6 Souls.

It's not really a possession or exorcism flick but if unorthodox religion and young-girl-as-ostrasized-victim floats your boat, you might check out Jug Face. Doesn't quite get to where it sets off for but some nice indie spooks and decent acting en route.

Carpenter's version is the only reason you ever knew that the original existed. I prefer the original too I think, but it's doesn't detract from it in any way to give Carpenter his fucking due.

The same goes for Mystery At the Wax Museum/House of Wax. The remake was great, and so was the original. There's nothing at all wrong with liking, and enjoying both.

With all the shitty remakes that get made these days, it would be nice to see more of them strive to be good/great films like the Thing, and House of Wax.

Never been much of a horror movie person. I like Silence of the Lambs, Seven- tense, psychological thriller (realistic drama) types (gross out shock horror and horror porn and cheap jump scares just aren't my thing).

I recommend the following (that is, for those anons the like the types of "scary" movies I do)

>The Gift.
https://youtu.be/IjF5wdY8zE0
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4178092/
Wasn't a big hit, but I thought it was very good. The guy that wrote and directed it stars as the bad guy, and he's excellent - is a big theater actor or something.

>Take Shelter
https://youtu.be/I5U4TtYpKIc
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1675192/
Excellent acting, Michael Shannon's absolutely brilliant, Jessica Chastain, and Shea Wigham (played Eli Thompson on Boardwalk empire)

>Martha Marcy May Marlene
https://youtu.be/ERREgOobLOs
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1441326/
Elizabeth Olsen's breakout role
John Hawkes is the Mansonesque cult leader type - he's awesome
Disturbing, and good.

I love found footage movies. If anyone has any more suggestions please let me know!

Here is a list of FF movies that I've, at the very least, enjoyed. Not all of them are amazing but I find these worth a watch (keep in mind I'm willing to give FF movies a lot of leeway since I love the genre):

>Noroi: The Curse
Loved it

>Occult
By the guy who did Noroi. Great except (like in my previous post) for the last minute. As long as you can get past that you might enjoy it.

>Shirome
Also by the Noroi guy but nowhere near as good. That said, I still enjoyed it a lot.

>The Conspiracy
Saw this the other day and really liked it. Some complain about the ending but thats because it could have a couple interpretations I think.

>Blair Witch
Overhyped but still good. I only saw it this year and thought it was pretty neat.

>V/H/S 1 and 2
Its an anthology series so its a mix of good and bad. Overall very enjoyable.

>the Tunnel
Great one that was mentioned in this thread.

>Rec 1 and 2
First one is great and second one is very good imho

>Trollhunter
Not really horror but I highly recommend this. It's really funny.

>Grave Encounters
Kinda goofy but I really liked it. They made a sequel which was just OK.

>the Bay (personal note: HORRIBLE)
Like others said, really good.

>The Last Exorcism
Really good.

>Apollo 18
Silly but worth a watch imo

>Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
Quirky half-comedy half-horror. Not really scary but its a lot of fun. Ton of horror cliches.

>The Sacrament
It was OK. It follows the Jonestowns stuff a bit too much to be scary.

>Cloverfield
Fun action movie.

I know I've seen a lot more so if I think them I'll add. I'm always open to suggestions myself!

Im not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet (I can't ctrl-f on my phone) but the new scream tv show on netflix is actually really good. The mystery of the show keeps you interested and even though they ditched the iconic mask, I think it was for the better. They do keep the iconic archetypes of the traditional campy movie (nerd, goth, slut, jock, nice girl). That being said they do so in a very good way, and even acknowledge that they are doing it. Another thing is the use of the 'nerd' character explaining the ideas of the show, I very much liked this and it was in no way overdone. The show focuses on cyberstalking/bullying and also has a good subplot which I won't spoil here, that keeps making you ask even more questions. The one thing I didn't like is the teenage culture they had, it seems disconnected like the writers observed their children for a day and went off of their interpretation with added "teenage" buzzwords. The second season is updated weekly on netflix and I recommend it.

Started watching VHS recently, thought it was pretty crappy. I stopped after the witch-succubus part.

Might not be popular to say, but The Blair Witch Project is still a fantastic horror movie. A masterpiece even. There's a reason it's as famous as it is - it's an extremely well done story, AND a well done horror-film.

I recently watched Lake Mungo, which is probably the most frightening thing I've seen in my life. I'd be extremely impressed if I find something more horrifying. I recommended the film to a Russian guy I work with, and he too said it was frightening as hell. It reveals almost nothing about what's really going on, but still manages to offer a satisfying conclusion (it's like The Blair Witch Project in that respect).

Jacob's Ladder used to be my most frightening movie, but I don't know if I still feel that way about it. I'd have to re-watch it to confirm.

I recently watched Noroi, a Japanese horror film that was recommended by people who enjoyed Lake Mungo. I was expecting a lot from this film. But holy shit was it bonkers. There was nothing frightening about it. Crazy tin-foil hat man was so over the top that it was laughable. The film had a few promising moments, but they all fall flat. And then, at the end, it goes full autist and explains the whole back story of the "demon" that's causing the paranormal events. Essentially an old Japanese demon got mad because the Japanese government decided to build a dam, and the damn was going to flood some place where people made offerings to it. What the fuck.

Watch Lake Mungo.

good soundtrack. i wish it had been a better film.

>Torso 10/10

why do people do this? this was nothing more than a cheaply dubbed italian made B movie with a plot taken from a made-for-tv murder mystery with a couple of scenes of tits with bright red paint splashed across the screen. Completely boring piece of shit. i challenge anyone to survive the hour and a half of shear boredom created by this movie.

while on the topic of italian horror movies, i've never understood why there was so much hype about these mostly B movies. i've seen all of Dario Argento's films and there are only maybe two or three of them that even rise above 5/10 level. Suspira is no doubt his very best film and even that one doesn't have a coherent plot and survives only on visual style and set pieces. lots of scenes shot with garish lighting and poor camera work. the soundtrack and other aspects of the film are effective for reasons that are unintentional. the dubbed voices, foley sounds, and the distorted (recording levels too high) soundtrack by Goblin give the film an eerie, otherworldly quality that was nothing more than a happy accident resulting from poor craftsmanship.

is there something i'm missing? i wouldn't mind being proven wrong.
>>
>>17796024
Um...your point being? That's not horror, that's drama.
>>
>>17795707
You're a narrow minded lobotomised child.
I'll give you an example, Hellraiser. Without a doubt it's a horror movie, and a good one at that. The special effects are top notch, the actors deliver great performances, but was it scary? Did it scare you? The answer to anyone over the age of five should be; no not really. But it wasn't really the movie's goal to make you jump out of your seat, or have you scared to sleep with the lights off that night.
It's still a good movie, and has plenty of merits besides "scaring" you. The genre of horror encompasses so much more than just making you jump out of your seat, or unnerving you.
Judging a horror movie on the criteria of 'did it scare you' is retarded because it's so subjective. Certain people are going to have higher tolerances, and there's plenty of shitty movies that rely on just making you jump. And there will always be that one asshole, who no matter what horror movie you bring up they'll always say "well it didn't scare me!".

And that's what's killing the horror genre. Because good atmospheric horror movies, that aren't necessarily scary, get overlooked of the cheap thrills and predictable jump scares that trick their idiotic audience into saying "well I flinched so I guess it's a good horror movie".

I know this is a common criticism but it's really mostly them arguing and doesn't do a very good job with atmosphere or suspense. And I don't know, maybe it's just me disliking found footage movies but non diegetic sound can make a horror movie much better and the style doesn't include that, meaning the movie is much less engaging. Just finished watching this 10 minutes ago. DO NOT WATCH! I mean if you're really into "oh look at this interesting analysis of the different ways society works" then fine but... honestly I was bored as hell and the ending wasn't so much "enigmatic" as "inconclusive".

"Hellraiser 2" is in many ways, for me at least, the ultimate horror movie. Not always menacing but definitely fucking awesome.

Really liked "Cube" and "Resolution" tho. Amazing, amazing stuff.

I loved Hellraiser II because of the way explored the Cenobites. The final showdown where they protect Kirsty and die like heroes was GOAT.

It is about a single mother whose hubby died and has to raise a garbage child that is all "muh magic tricks" who gets read a scary story and is all "muh babadook" and then she has to deal with his random screechings (not even related to a monster, I just remember he sometimes decides to start screaming when she is talking to him, might just be my brain filtering out his screen time).

Also she has to deal with him creating weapons and sneaking them into school, not sure if he actually hurts a kid with one or not.

He also runs off a potential date for his mom with a nice guy because "muh daddy" and "muh autism".

I never made it to the end of the movie so I can only speak for the first 2/3-3/4 of it but as far as I can tell there is no monster (besides the kid). But I think she has a psychological break and starts seeing the Babadook at some point, and sweat Jesus I hope the hallucinations end up having her kill her kid.

It is not so much a horror movie about monsters, as much as it is a horror movie about living as a single mother. I guarantee you teen pregnancy would drop significantly if that movie was a part of this countrys mandatory sex ed.

Pretty sure the soundtrack for it follows is the same person who did the soundtrack for Fez. I live about 40 minutes away from the old asylum they filmed at. It makes the movie even better when its filmed around areas you frequent.

This has to be one of the worst horror movies I've ever watched, honestly. Nothing horror like happens, AT ALL, there is a bit of torture and gore but that's it. The music is and overall athmosphere is fine, above average for horror, but it just wasn't used right.
Maybe I just didn't get it but holy fuck this movie was boring and tedious...do not recommend it
>>
>>17792759
The Borderland/Final Prayer, high production value. Some hate the ending, but I thought it was a fresh and new.
Not really about exorcism, but definately religious theme
>>
>>17799287
Yes, it would have.

They shouldn't have even shown the monsters/aliens. It should have ended with her seeing something and being like "oh my god" and then cut. Leaving it entirely ambiguous, so you don't know if John Goodman was lying or not.
But of course they had to shoehorn in the cloverfield shit.
>>
>>17799364
If it ended like that a lot of cloverfield fans would have been really disappointed, including myself.
It being a "cloverfield movie" and not showing the aliens would suck big time.
If she just saw something as you said people in the audience would already know that it was aliens, and then not showing them or utilizing them at all?
Trust me, the ending you propose would piss of a lot.

It might piss people off but it wouldn't have been as stupid as her becoming an action hero, making Molotov cocktails and throwing them perfectly while hanging out of a car.

What people who defend the 10 Cloverfield Lane ending don't understand is just how retarded the change of pace is.

It goes from a basically plausible real world thriller to schlocky sci-fi shit where you can kill a 100-ton spaceship/monster with a fucking molotov cocktail.

Even if you like the character development angle in the final scene, the change of pace is just retarded, and the CGI is so over-the-top and inconsistent with the tone of the rest of the film up to that point.

I seriously wonder what the hell is wrong with some of you, that you can't appreciate the horrific elements of having a mother you no longer recognize or trust, or a child you want to kill (Babbadook, another favorite punching bag around here, which I also thought was excellent.). Might be time to quit 4chan for a while and see if you can find rediscover your humanity.

LOL I get it! He's tipping his fedora! That's so ingenious. Did you make that? How long did it take? What can you tell us about the process? Just what was going on in your brain that lead to it? It took a really big brain to come up with something like that.
