Depending on your definition of snuff, they are real or not.

Originally, the definition of snuff films was the filming or recording of a human murder for commercial purposes. (Watch the film 8mm with Nicolas Cage, is about the MC investigating if the snuff film some old rich guy had on his safety vault was real or not. They spend some time differentiating them from rape, BDSM and staged/practical effects films)

The "commercial purpose" part is the key. Films with extreme violence and accidents have been around since forever, but nobody classified them as snuff films because either the recording was accidental (they just happened to be there when shit hit the fan), or were not intended to be distributed to obtain financial compensation, like some of those serial killers who recorded themselves killing. So, the gore webm you see posted on /b/ every other hour are not snuff films, neither the propaganda videos done by the mexican drug cartels or the ISIS. The former usually are industrial or road gruesome accidents, and the later obey to propagandistic purposes, not commercial.

So... have been cases of people filming a murder hoping to obtain money from selling the recording? Or rich guys handing money to some random director to kill someone and record it?

Unfortunately, yes, there are snuff films under that classification.

I know that is not necessarily what OP means by snuff film, but since the late 80's murderers have been filming themselves killing people. And with all the new technology it has only gotten more popular, and even easier to do while remaining anonymous or, you know...look at ISIS.

Point is, they film themselves killing. And all it takes is for just one to share their footage. And without a doubt, many have.

The guy I was talking about, the asian dude in Cali, supposedly left copies of his snuff films somewhere and they found their way onto the internet. Supposedly. But they exist, and the police still have them as evidence. So the very fact that an actual hard copy of any of his films exist, leads to possibility of them being out there to see. And when you take into account that many, many more killers have done the same stuff and even TRIED to make their footage public, it means it's probable that the stereotypical "Snuff Film" exists. And not just Abu Hasheem blowing someone's brains out.
