Each of the scenes I mentioned could have been executed in a very eerie manner by a competent director. However, they came off as comical because Robert Eggers couldn't decide whether he wanted to do a horror movie, a period drama, or an art film. Most "truly terrifying" scenes come off as comical if you're unable to preserve tone and tension; when you're genre-jumping every scene, it's constantly breaking tension. It seems to me that Eggers was more concerned with folklore and historical accuracy for its own sake than incorporating it into the plot in any meaningful, interesting, or frightening fashion.

Awesome film, and extremely believable until I recognized the actor from Safety Not Guaranteed. Mr. Peachfuzz scenes were the best.

On that note, did anyone see "They're Watching (2016)"? I feel like I'm the only one in love with how meta and smart this movie is, including the cheesy langoliers style ending effects. However, discussing this movie would only ruin the surprise.

You know I really wish I did, but I think the only thing that comes close is Solaris.

There is, however, a short film by George Lucas (it was basically his first claim to fame, so don't panic, this is definitely pre-90's Lucas) called THX 1138 (and, before you ask, no this is not the feature length film [which was completely ripped off by Michael Bay with his work, The Island] THX 1138, and yes, this is where THX came from because of the short film's emphasis on sound). While it may be hard to relate this piece to /x/, (it's a little more sci-fi than paranormal), there are some certain aspects of it that are /x/, such as mind-control via transmitted frequencies. Fortunately enough, this gem is readily available on the Youtube. Also, I feel that this is one of the only films (along with Beyond the Black Rainbow) that produces the same feelings associated with Boards of Canada.

I am not particularly sure if I'd say Cushing was more important to horror than Boris Karloff or Lon Chaney Sr. To me he's a great actor who's wonderful the horror films he's in, but he's always the second fiddle. Never really the monster or the main interest in the film. Definetely not on the same level as a Vincent Price. Kind of odd he's the main focus in your picture. Love him though.

You didn't see movies like TCM back in 1974. You may say it's probably one of the most original and pure horror movies out there. It doesn't follow a specific formular and it had such a frightening grainy sense of isolation and realism. Truly one of the few horror films that I legit find scary. This is literally the only film after watching on Netflix repeatedly (which I tend to do a lot of with their best ones) that I actually purchased after they stopped streaming it. I only have about 25 DVDs to my name, so that's saying something.

This film had it all; visuals, soundtrack, originality... and something so magical about it that it even induced me to create artwork inspired by the film (mostly through beadingas a medium).

Any I don't know if it was suggested yet and too tired to look but Necromentia. It has something to at least offend everybody, worth a watch if your a jaded horror viewer. I didn't find it scary but there was some disturbing parts which is rare for me unless it's an Achelous tendon or heel getting fucked up. The source material is always better. The movie is wonderful as its own thing. Haven't seen the sequels and I probably never will. Already too many horror movies I haven't watched and need to. Feel like a pleb even though I've seen so many greats. Hell, I have never fully watched Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th, but I still consider myself to be more of a true hardcore fan of horror because I've sat down and watched Nosferatu, Dr. Caligari, Dracula, Frankenstein, Invisible Man, The original Fly, House of Wax, and literally a ton of others. I'm worried Wicker Man will be boring. Doesn't seem very horror, and the trailer did not help.

The ones I'm looking forward to the most are Suspiria and House. Something about 70's foreign horror films that seem very creative. We're they ever dubbed in English or am I stuck with watching it subbed. I've noticed watching a horror film in which I have to look at the words at the bottom of the screen constantly really ruin my suspension I disbelief. Suspiria may be in English. Not really sure. I know it's an Italian film, so it may be dubbed considering all Italian films are like that. There aren't any dialogue in their films and they usually put in dialogue later

The Wicker Man is every bit as horror as the others, it just unravels as a mystery. I like the way it unfolds slowly. Some might find it boring but I don't.

The Fly is The Fly - David Cronenberg style. If you like him, you'll love his take on the classic. It's much more visceral than the original as you'd expect.

An American Werewolf in London is simply the most unique spin on the werewolf sub genre as I've ever seen.

The Thing is pure excellence the whole way through. The cast, the acting, the paranoia, the legendary special effects, everything.

House is a ride. It's not one I watch all the time but to say it's unique is an understatement. It's like Japanese Evil Dead 2 cranked up to 11.

As for Suspiria all I have to say is this: I went into it with extremely high expectations and it still blew me away. Simple as that, I heard it was amazing, figured it would be, watched it, and it immediately became a personal favorite. And yes it is in English. No subtitles required.

I really hope you enjoy most of these if not all of them.

If you read his early stuff (IE rats in the walls) You'll see he focused more on atmospheric horror and the effects that an incredibly vague and sometimes completely unseen antagonist had on the sanity of the protagonists.
