I think and hope it is going to kick off the new age of heroes, as long as my part in it is one I want. Starting most likely with creatures, large and small, followed by their creators and other high powered beings.

To answer, the world would erupt into chaos. Expect a complete social/cultural shift. We'd have to ban together as a species to prevent total destruction but of course with a massive amphibious "alien" creature showing up religion is going to fall to shit which means war. I don't think there's anything in religious text (excluding Lovecraftian work as religious text) that says a kaiju will emerge from the Hudson River and spew its children about the land.

You could say that there is such a being in the Marianas Trench or something like that but it's even more unlikely that they would have adapted to pray on land. Making that scenario "Possible" would require some serious science. After all, this beast is like 200 feet tall. How it even stands up is beyond me. But it's probably not impossible.

As for what would happen, most of the major Religions would piss their pants. Especially Christianity.
Then the major governments would also piss their pants, but put on a new pair and turn it into swiss cheese and, depending on how much damage it does, radioactive ash. Then the governments try to rebuild the now collapsed economy.
Scientifically, study of the creature's biology would probably lead to significant advances in medicine and armor, due to it's extreme resistance.
During the fallout, everybody would be paranoid of another creature. The world's military's would be drastically increased in size. Submarines and warships would escort cargo ships. And larger cities would have walls of cannons and ships around them.

But realistically, yes, suppose they would. And suppose there's no way to avoid massive casualties because of the montster's proximity to cities or villages or even some small island full of peace-loving people. What? Give me a break. Believe it or not, nuclear weapons are not the fucking answer to every enemy, foreign or domestic. I think they would go through an array of solutions before they resorted to the absolute last, which would also have the largest collateral damage. Cloverfield actually got this part right.

What they got wrong was that the monster appears to be breathing or aspirating to some degree. Here's the problem: the incendiary carpet-bombing should have fucked that thing up. I'm not saying that it would have asphyxiated it as was the case of some victims of the bombings of Hamburg and Dresden, but it should have done a lot more than just knock the thing down.

And if we are to believe they were using thermobaric explosives instead, it would have severely fucked that thing up. The pressure would have fucked up it's gills or lungs or whatever the fuck they are (remember, they're on the outside of it's head). There is also the potential of the ethylene or propylene deflagrating instead of detonating. At which point, it'd be like having boiling chemicals all over your fucking skin and all in the air you breathe.

That's was the only part of the movie that made me say, "Come on..".

The only way they could work is if they swarm, the way they overran that military checkpoint in the film, or in close quarters, the subway would be a nightmare to clear out and would probably require flamethrowers to be recommissioned.
