The Titanics sister ship, the Olympic, was damaged when it collided with a Royal Navy ship off Bristol. As the Navy were involved, they conducted the investigation, not surprisingly they found the fault to be on the side of the Olympic's crew, so no insurance payout. So JP Morgan switched the ships, sailed the already compromised Olympic out under the name of 'Titanic' and sunk it for a huge insurance payout. Knowing it was going to sink he took the opportunity to get rid of some competition and got them on the ship and also stole all the worth having stuff out of the cargo hold (ie gold bullion and artefacts from antiquity) when he was supposedly removing his own belongings having dropped out of the voyage.
I believe the captain was greased and told that the ship would be sabotaged to the point where the insurance would pay out but the ship would not sink, so he didn't follow protocol after the incident because he didn't think there was any real danger.

As the theory goes, yes the "Titanic" that sank was the Olympic, but there were ships planted in the area that were intended to quickly rescue the passengers & crew with little to no lives lost. Unfortunately, where the Olympic was and where the planted rescue ships were told the Olympic would be differed enough to make it a disaster.
