i agree. i saw this version first and thought it was great. then i saw the japanese original and thought it was really unremarkable and not nearly as well made or stylistically cohesive as the american remake. it's rare that a remake is better. this is one of those rare instances.

It's rare that foreign flicks are better than American versions. Foreign flicks are usually retardedly boring and far too long for their own good. I'm sorry, but a movie shouldn't be 2 hours long, especially when yhe entire movie is just setting up for a twist ending.

I can't believe why anyone would prefer the american version. It lacks the subtlety and atmosphere of the original and replaced it with stupid Hollywood clichés. It spoonfeeds you information to make sure that there's absolutely nothing intruiging or mysterious left when the average joe americans leaves the cinema.

It also has that ugly green/blue filter on for the entire film.

I'd say the Originals are more likely to subtly get under my skin though, plus their are a few scenes which make my blood run cold.

I gave the book a shot but I can't read Japanese and the prose of the translation I had seemed a bit wooden so I didn't end up finishing it.

The remake took everything cool about the Japanese version and made it beautiful, artful and cool.

That movie has some stunning shots in it. Such a good movie. It's rare that a remake is better than the original but this is one of those rare cases.

It's more subtle and understated, which makes it better.

The Japanese video is better. The American one was pretty creepy definitely, but there was too much pyrotechnics--it was overdone. The Japanese tape looked homemade which was better, it looked like a snuff film or something. I'll never forget that guy with a cloth over his head pointing at something and that weird screechy sound.

Also, Sadako's single eye peering down menacingly is far superior to the shit American version where they just decided that giving the girl a grumpy old man face that looks like Nathan Explosion off Metalocalypse was a good idea.
