I think the 'nervous' or whatever it is off-putting about it comes from us wanting to create order out of chaos in the world - it's a perfect reason to measure things. But measuring everything in nature doesn't give us any real control over it. We can know almost everything but still not understand it. Nature is ordered and balanced and perfect, but it still brings "chaos" to our lives. At least that's about all I can stand to think before I shiver and try to forget about the damn pic.

I’m just wondering what the heck is in our water supply, what the heck is in our oxygen supply of the metallic oxide salts that create a rainbow effect in a sprinkler.

np, I realized when I looked up her info that while I remembered Elvira from growing up in the 80's and 90's, I didn't actually know how it was she came about. And I find it pretty interesting that there was an icon, so to speak, in those days that was so recognizable and popular AND completely /x/-tier. I mean, I'm sure Halloween was the biggest time of year for her work-wise, but she was just another pop culture figure then, who just happened to be a "spooky" lady.

I tried to think of someone or something that we've had in society since then, and I really couldn't think of one. I mean, we certainly don't have one now and haven't had any recent ones.

Maybe the crypt keeper guy from Tales from the Crypt was similar. I never watched that show, but I knew his face and that it scared the piss out of me when I was young. I can understand having logic on /x/, new rules and like any fantasy it is always better if the story is valid. Applying science sparingly and in a way that supports the suspension of disbelief can add to a story, take a look at how it is done with people who believe in free certain free energy machines -- some certainly are deluding themselves or trying to sell some worthless product -- and most of the time the science adds to the internal logic.
