He is talking about Mathematics that serve no purpose in the real world, and cannot be repeated.

There are so many utopian people bedazzled by spaceflight and computers think this is "progress" and will bring humanity into some kind of golden age, despite that every trend from physical to metaphysical leads to dissolution. Indeed we are making progress, the word every modern person uses to justify this state, but the word progress does not necessarily imply anything good. We are progressing to our doom.
