Don't know why they keep getting deleted.

Discuss polytheism and polytheist paganism, personal beliefs, recommended reading, etc.

anyone have books on celtic paganism? i am interested in norse paganism but most of my blood comes from ireland.

>but most of my blood comes from ireland
Unless you are into ancestor worship, I really don't like this line.

>I am interested in norse paganism
Then consider these

>DuBois, Thomas A. Nordic Religions in the Viking Age. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 1999. Print.

>Mitchell, Stephen A., Witchcraft and Magic in the Nordic Middle Ages. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2010. Print.

Both academic texts. Perhaps they are not what you want if you want all the details, but they are still good.

In the last thread I said I was going to a Celtic festival and would look for some pagan-related stuff. Didn't end up getting anything but got some photos.

>>17594894
>what do you mean?

Because I don't see how your ancestry should in anyway determine which gods you worship.

i like that idea 2bh. i wouldn't "worship" egyptian gods because i don't have egyptian blood. same with the other types like the Greek/Roman paganism.

>i wouldn't "worship" egyptian gods because i don't have egyptian blood

What if Bast, or anyone else for that matter, contacts you?
>>
>>17594918
i still wouldn't practice egyptian paganism. i would want to stick with my paganism.
also i don't believe these gods can contact you. they are more like spirits to me.
>>
>>17594914
>i wouldn't "worship" egyptian gods because i don't have egyptian blood.

This concept is very shaky in terms of actual genetic ancestry. What people mean when they say this is: "we have no recent family members that come from ____ culture". This is pretty limiting and when the larger scope of human history is taken into account, you most likely do have "egyptian" ancestors, "african" ancestors or ancestors from all over the globe.

The truth is that "blood" and "race" are very loose and vague concepts, animist and pagan faiths have always been extremely resistant to concepts like these.

Im not saying this to start an "is race real" argument, the point Im trying to make is that all animism and paganism, be it Asatru, Kemeticism, the african diaspora, or many others, all go back to common ancestral roots and share a great deal of similarities in practice.

Limiting your spiritual/magical/religious options and experience because of your immediate families geographical locations is shortsighted in my opinion.

I think if you have a specific question or need which is best met by a particular god, then they may be available to you. To my mind, they carry archetypes of human experience, and a certain god from one culture may be the best match for your need.

He said he'd look for some pagan stuff, not specifically celtic.
>>
>>17595484
How did they get around the Christian influence on the texts?
>>
>>17596745
They drew a lot of their material from Viktor Rydberg, this Swede from the 1800s who did some serious academic footwork tracking down the authentic beliefs of pre-Christian Europe and weeding out Christian spin.

The whole beginning of his "Investigations into German Mythology" is a debunking of the gods=Trojan heroes myth

Highly recommended for people who want more than new age books about how to do rune magic lol

Ooh, get her. Someone light the fuse on your tampon, dear?

Modern Christianity is a deviation.
Read up on Egypt, Rome and Greece first before moving on to the older religions.
This isn't something you pick and choose based on personal preference, you either KNOW or don't.

You will be guided up until a certain point.

You need to ground yourself in good polytheistic theology. It's always been a little scant until recently but we're starting to get some pretty good theologians of our own popping up lately. I'll post some links to a few good books to get a good grounding in it.

Let's start with this one.

Here's a Norse themed book that you really should have.

>>
>>17598463

Rydberg is pretty heavily disputed. Not saying he might not have been right about many things but he was certainly wrong about many things too.

And the Asatru Edda is an attempt to make a "bible" out of it by trying to place the mythology in a chronological order that it doesn't actually have in the primary texts, along with several questionable (and even worse than questionable!) interpretations.

"Shill" is obviously the correct term to use in this case. The book is fucking garbage.

>>
>>17604123
I can't even understand what you are saying.
>>
Freyja is a wonderful Goddess; she's helping me heal in so many ways.
Thor inspires me to not give up, can't say that he's personally done anything for me though; but I still like him.
The Allfather on the other hand...it's like he wants my worship but doesn't want to give anything in return. When I begin to stray from him, he'll send the most blatant and random synchronicities my way. I'm really not sure what he wants.
>>
>>17606163
If you're worshipping any of the asas then Odin will demand special recognition as the head of their clan. It's primarily the recognition he usually wants, unless you're doing a lot of magic or fighting, or you have some unresolved issue involving death.
If you invoke multiple deities, try starting with Odin and working your way down in order of heirarchy or bloodline. You could also put up something in his name, something dominant in a secluded place would be best.
>>
>>17606236
I hear you; truth is I've always been interested in magic but I've never really meddled with it outside of the two spells that worked too well. At one point I was seeing his name/general image (old man in a hat/with a beard/with a spear/Ravens) everywhere, everyday. On instinct, I leave out some wine after announcing that I've noticed him, and if he desires to communicate then I am listening (the wine was a token of good faith). Since then he's appears on the edge of my vision whenever I achieve lucid dreaming (I seem to know not to look at him directly).
He's just always there, watching. Not necessarily watching over me as such, but he wants me to know he can see me. Like I said, no idea why he wants me to know or what his machinations are. I practise martial arts too, if that's relevant.

I actually like Freyja and Thor, good vibes coming from their way. The Allfather, pun not intended, makes me want to keep an eye out for anything strange.
>>
>>17606393
Ah, now that you've elaborated, I think it's a little clearer. Are you working towards anything specific with your lucid dreaming, or developing your ability to achieve it? I don't have much experience with lucid dreaming, but it's very much the sort of thing Odin is into, dreams, altered states of consciousness and so forth. It's possible he's interested in something you're doing (or should be doing) on that front. In addition to the "looking out for anything strange" thing, I'm quite sure that he's at least trying to get you to discover or realise something, but Odin never just tells you things, he's all about mysticism.
Besides that, giving him special recognition like I said can't hurt matters, it's what I always do when I invoke the asas and he's always been somewhat helpful to me.
>>
>>17606456
I'm working on developing it; most nights I get to a stage where my perception of the dream is heightened. Beyond that, on rare occasion, I snap awake into what I call the hyper reality (nothing else to describe that state of dreaming) and not long after; that's when I notice him there in the sidelines.
I'll try praying to him more regularly, unfortunately I can't leave out offerings all the time due to my living situation, but I'll keep a record of what happens.
Many, many thanks for your insight Anon; it's a pleasure to hear from someone with experience.
>>
>>17606511
You're welcome, friend, I'm glad I could be of some help.
