I'm a big fan of Alien.
>>

The first Saw movie is actually great, after that it stops implying violence off screen for the most part and indulges in torture porn and it goes off a ledge.

litteraly shittiest horror
>>
>>17529028
Good premise, suffered from having a director who thought he was too smart for the genre and clearly didn't like horror that much. Buoyed by one of the all time great horror soundtracks

Off the top of my head:
The Exorcist
The Exorcist III
Candyman
Halloween

seconding this. kind of corny in the horror trope aspect imo, but the style in which it was filmed made me feel so claustrophobic the whole time that it was completely worth it. It had the same feeling as Ted the Caver and spoopy abandoned mine exploration videos, just unnervingly cramped. 10/10 would watch again
>>
>>17529016
Omg! I laughed as fuck with this movie 100/100

Resolution
Watched a film called Last shift last night, like Carpenter's assault on Precinct Thirteen but with a supernatural theme, thought it was good and scary with a great ending. resolution, though. Phew. scary and mind-fucky, I love it.
Banshee Chapter is wicked too and every /x/phile seems to dig it (found footage, though, so.....)

Reposting with a few edits what I wrote in another thread.

The Blair Witch Project (I know, it isn't groundbreaking now but it was when it came out) is maybe the most Lovecraftian and "philosophical" horror movie I've ever seen. The Witch as the Kantian Thing-in-Itself that we surround and wrap in tales and fragmentary accounts, the narrative noumenon becoming (hyper)reality and our lives being affected by our inventions - it really is an astounding movie, even on the technical side of things: it reminds me of Mekas's experimentation, or more generally the more autobiographical side of the New American Cinema.

Another mandatory pick is I Can See You, maybe one of the most lysergic horror films I've ever seen (well, excluding maybe Begotten and Pop Skull), one that manages to both unnerve and amaze. Few other movies, I think, managed to capture the uncanny that is so fundamental in contemporary horror.

Tetsuo: The Iron Man, while not being purely an horror, has managed to make everybody I've watched it with squirm and writhe on their seats.

The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears is perhaps the greatest Giallo movie to ever come into being, and bar none THE MOST visceral film I've ever seen, cinematography- and photography-wise. You can feel the cardiac rhytm of colors, the schizoid rupture of logic and perspective - I yearn for a "true" horror director to be inspired by this masterpiece.

The Nightmare, while getting a lot of flak on here for its religious-spiritual take on Sleep Paralysis (which, I agree, it's an act of extreme theleological incorrectness by the director[s]), still manages to be one of the most interesting horror movies of the last couple years, especially for its metafilmic qualities (which tie incredibly well into the whole "multidimensional" subtext, could go on about this forever) and the reappropriation of external footage - the legacy of Debord and its detournement, it just occured to me, and it makes me love it even more.

I'm almost tempted to say The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh. Nice and creepy through the whole movie, but keep an eye on the time left in the movie. When you see that you only have five or ten minutes until the credits, just turn it off and make up your own ending. If you accidentally watch until the end the whole movie will be ruined.

Bet you think Orwell's essay on English is the final word on style

>>17530949
Probably. Doesn't stop me from applying what I know and think to their work - I think the author's dead. You may believe differently, of course.

>>17530957
It is deeply Lovecraftian - all which is positive in his works (as in, all that he writes, he posits) is a mask on something unknowable and undefinable. One of his main themes is the human folly of creating rituals (based on superstition) and then acting within those self imposed limits, effectively creating reality and meaning by that action, which is exactly what is showcased in the Blair Witch Project.

>>17531187
Please exaplin why and how? I'd like to amend my mistakes, if I have actually said something wrong.

Poughkeepsie Tapes
Pretty cool mockumentary

Alien Abduction: Incident at Lake County
Great mockumentary. Pretty much Paranormal Activity but with aliens. Also it's from the 90'ies and it holds up really well.

Noroi: The Curse
Cool Japanese mockumentary horror. You can find it subbed on Youtube I believe.

Pontypool
Don't know if you can call this one a horror, but definitely worth a watch.

Caché (Hidden)
More of a thriller, has a fucked up scene, but it'll probably test your patience unless you're a movie buff and don't mind something different.

The Descent
A very well made horror movie. Cinematography is on point, excellent atmosphere and very claustrophobic.

As Above So Below
A better mockumentary than most people give it credit for. Has some very cool scenes and themes.

4th Kind
Pretty cool mockumentary/movie about aliens. Has a few scenes that are really unsettling.

Lake Mungo
More of a Mystery/Drama than a Horror movie, but still awesome to watch and definitely worth your attention. Has one jump scare'ish scene which is pretty fucked up, but the real mindfuck comes right before the movie's ending and also during when the credits are rolling.

The VVitch
Haven't even seen this one yet, but have heard A LOT of good shit about this one so I'm excited and without a doubt adding it to this list

The Nightmare
Regardless if you suffer from Sleep Paralysis, this 'documentary' has some very creepy scenes which are re-enactments from victims' experiences.

The Strangers
Kind of a slasher film, but the villains are pretty spoopy because of the layer of mystery present all the way through 'till the ending. Also doesn't help that it was based on true events.

28 Days Later
Don't listen to the moron up top who said he didn't care for fast zombies. This film is really well made, incredibly suspenseful and pretty nervewrecking. Which is exactly all the things a zombie movie should be.

I could go on and on, but all I have left are pretty well known horror movies.

Lovecraftian horror is cosmic horror, BWP, is just a found footage movie dealing with a witch, nothing cosmic there.
>>
>>17532182
What is cosmic horror? What's your definition of it? You aren't saying anything. You assert stuff without any arguments to back it up.

Look, you're making me seem more aggressive than I really am - but there's nothing to talk about in what you post. You say Lovecraftian horror is cosmic horror and leave it at that, like it's something self-evident. What does it take for horror to be "cosmic"? Does it have to deal with the whole universe? Is it aout the inherent nothingness of the human race when confronted with the utterly inuhuman processes going on around us?

Similarly, how can you say
>a found footage movie dealing with a witch, nothing cosmic there
without trying to elaborate on how that experience isn't metaphoric or allegorical or representative of humanity's relationship with the unknown? Come on, debate.

>>17532166

If you can get behind Expressionist-ish visuals, there actually was a Call of Cthulhu adaptation in 2005, but you probably know about that. I thought it was pretty good, but I'm a sucker for stuff like Caligari or Der Golem or Cowards Bend the Knee.

>>
>>17532226
im not the previous guy, but
>elaborate on how that experience isn't metaphoric or allegorical or representative of humanity's relationship with the unknown?
it isnt because that wasnt in the movie. it wasnt hinted at. BWP barely had a plot. if some kids being scared in the woods could be considered lovecraftian, then you might as well argue that the idea of fear is lovecraftian. theres nothing in this movie beyond scared kids in the woods and some witch backstory that seems fake and unfinished.

Lovecraft cast a fairly wide net, including a Frankenstein rip-off. That said, he's best known for the "tentacles from Dimension X" stuff, and that's what most people mean when they say Lovecraftian, including you and I. Ignore the pretentious attention-fag, he thinks too highly of himself.

Went to see this at the cinema, I wasn't expecting it to be good but it was probably one of the best horrors I've seen recently. The acting was good and great feel of that era with the dialect. No shitty jumps or terrible cgi, just dark proper horror. I don't get phased by much really but the amount of sounds of a repulsed audience when the witch is rubbing a crushed baby over her naked body was great.
>>
>>17529486
Second on Banshee Chapter. It manages to cram together a bunch of /x/ related things (hallucinogens, aliums/extra dimensional beings, number stations, possession) and still form a fairly decent story that feels pretty spoopy. My only complaint is that the one character that seemed meant as a Hunter S. Thompson parody was hard to take seriously when he became important to the story.

I really like The Conjuring too. I think it's the best of the current crop of contemporary horror flicks. Possibly because it has such classic influences. A lot of it seems like a love letter to 70s horror through a modern lens.

Excited for the Enfield haunting.

This hasn't been mentioned yet; it's about a grizzled cynical Vatican miracle investigator sent to a remote old church to look into possible holy occurrences, and the younger cameraman who is setting up the recording equipment.
It's a slow build, reminds me of the ghost stories of MR James (ancient evil in a rural church) and you get to know the two protagonists as they form a friendship, which makes what happens to them all the more horrifying

Yep. Watched it thanks to this thread and even though the premise is good (at least the haunted catacombs 'wait, are we walking into hell' part. The alchemy shit is retarded to the core), the movie goes from 0 to stupid in 3 seconds. There were maybe two shots that actually justified the mockumentary framing while all of the dialogue was written in the style of a horror/suspense flick, which was totally jarring throughout. It's a shame because there was some authentically good performance going toward delivering terrible writing.

At least I watched Noroi: The Curse afterward, which was a good chemo after the cancer I'd just watched.

But I actually meant to use that word - a big theme of Lovecraft's writing is the union between different bloodlines (in this case, the sea-people and the inhabitans of Innsmouth), which he meant as a metaphor/warning for interracial breeding, hence my usage of miscegenated.

>>17535804
Lysergic is a synonim for hallucinatory and/or psychedelic. I used it because I think the word itself sounds nicer than the ones sharing its meaning. Didn't use a thesaurus by the way, and I'm not an anglophone. make of that what you like.

>>17532330
I'm not trying to attention fag, I just want to extend the discourse we're having. Sure, Lovecraftian horror is "tentacles from Dimension X" but, as you said, it can be much more - I'm just trying to widen the range of what Lovecraftian horror is, injecting my own thoughts. The criticism I had for the other poster(s) was based on how they handled the discussion.

>>17532301
Well, I do kind of think Lovecraft gave us the best practical definition of what fear is - I think (again, it's my opinion, it's probably nothing more than an hyperbole) the notion of fear was born when humanity invented fire, when we began to differentiate between light and dark during the night; when we began to think we could "illuminate" what was unseen - i think there's a Lovecraft quote on the topic of humanity as a futile, fleeting sparkle against the eternal backdrop of cosmic darkness? But I digress, My point remains: BWP is about our relationship to the unknown and how it is shaped by our superstitions.
I wish someone looked at the other movies I mentioned, they're far better than the Blair Witch Project
If you're looking for a horror movie in the fun direction, go for Tales of Halloween. It's not that scary, but it's a crap load of fun, having multiple stories: Some meant to be 'scary', others meant to be funny.

It's like Trick'r'Treat took itself a lot less seriously. Also: The best 'alien' horror short in a compilation horror flick you will ever see.

It's also a Halloween themed flick, so you may want to save it for then if you want to be in the Halloween spirit.

>>17544089
Well, thanks man. Rereading what I've done I understand how I can sort of come across as excessively try-hardish but really, I just wanted to discuss the movies I love with a tad more depth than just saying, this is good, this is bad, this is boring. I posted my opinions as they came to me and would have loved to have them challenged (as it happened in a few posts) and for a coherent discussion to emerge - predictably, I mostly got name calling. Now I don't want to bitch and moan about it, this is 4chan afterall and I've been here long enough to understand a few of its basic social mechanics, but to think that there are people who think that saying something is "pretentious", "neck-beardish", "straight off a thesaurus" is equivalent to an argumentation is depressing. I like it when someone disagrees with me, when I can exchange opinions and arguments with others - only, I'd like them to be a bit more substantied than "lol retard, nice unneccesary vocabulary there".

>>17544669
Agreed. It's one of the few movies that understood the subtlety of memetic horror - most of the narration is structured like a creepypasta, just managing to get that "this can happen to you with ease, and once it begins it will never really end" vibe without having to repeat it endlessly, like most movies do. Just watched this and thank you so much for the rec. I watch so many crappy horror movies, and wonder why I don't care about anything that's happening on screen, and this gives the answer. You have to give a shit about the characters. This is easily going into my top 3.
>>
Freaks (1932) creepy as fuck since they were real freaks in the movie.
Prince of darkness(1987) really good john carpenter movie, underrated in my opinion.
Society (1990)

Seconded, I was actually supprised with how short this movie was though

Has NOBODY mentioned Beyond the Black Rainbow??

It's not "terrifying" scary, but there are actually a few scenes that will disturb you for some time after. Plus, fantastic soundtrack and well-done early 80's vibe.

Yes, everything would be wonderful if everyone were as nihilistic as you.

So, you don't think
it was the ghost dreaming of her son all along?
It was a very good movie indeed. Watched it about three days ago, and the atmosphere was awesome, some elements very creepy and not typical horror at all.

>I wish someone looked at other movies I mentioned

Well, I watched The Strange Color of your Body's Tears based on your recommendation, and while I agree with the sheer viscerality of the cinematography, I have to say that I found the plot completely incomprehensible. The fact that I had absolutely no idea what I was supposed to be watching in any given scene subverted a lot of the evocative impact of the imagery because I could never make heads or tails of what it was trying to evoke relative to any tangible development. I had never watched nor heard of Giallo Film before you mentioned it, so I was left wondering at several points whether there were conventions that I was simply unfamiliar with which would help orientate me to the story. Put another way, I was frustrated because I was suspicious that the film expected the viewer to be informed, which I was not. However, even as an uninformed viewer, I expected I'd be able to emerge with at least a synopsis, something I can honestly say I didn't quite come away with. I want to label it as surrealist, but aside from being afraid that that is simply wrong and I just don't get it, the film seems to repeatedly allude to some core structure that never quite took form, leaving me with the impression it was less surreal and more absurd. I don't know if it's fair to make this comparison since I'm not /lit/, but it seems reminiscent of Finnegans Wake, an anti-narrative that can only really be enjoyed by people who are singularly devoted to the medium. Maybe that's giving it too much credit. Perhaps you'd know.

tl;dr: I didn't get it, and my ambivalence toward the plot left me too unimmersed to appreciate imagery I at least on some level understood as highly visceral.

Barker I haven't read yet (outside of the first 50 pages or so of The Great and Secret Show and that was just because I was horny and thirteen) and sadly I haven't opened a King book in the last three or four years, so I haven't got much to say about them - except that I can still vividly remember King's mastery of the objects of his narrative worlds, how they were always an embodiment of Evil. I think it's especially apparent in It and his short stories collections. If you like that part of his writing (and Lovecraft, of course), I'd urge you to pick up Laird barron's books. While objectively worse than the major authors, they're worth a read.

>>17546515
That post is a goldmine, thanks anon!

>>17548741
I share much of what you've written. The plot is incomprehensible, development is close to nonexistent - but I'd argue there's no need for them, not in this movie. I may be biased because I've been watching a lot of abstract movies and my enjoyment of film as a medium shifted more towards an aesthetic appreciation, based on pure form, so I was fairly satisfied with what I'd seen, even if I couldn't "make sense" of it plotwise. I don't think a pregress knowledge of Giallo conventions would have done much for you, but if it helps, the genre is based upon the unseen and the alien inherent to any thorough investigation of day to day reality - it heavily features black-clad, shadowy killers, dazzling colors and close shots on body parts. One thing you made me think about, though, it's how the movie parallels the main character(s)'s schizoid behaviour, always returning to the same leitmotifs, often from a different perspective. More than watching a movie, it's like looking at a tridimensional picture in a crystal cube from all possible perspectives at once. By the way, if you liked the cinematography but would like a more coherent story, try looking into the directors' first movie, Amer.

>try looking into the director's first movie, Amer

I think I will, thanks. Despite some of my misgivings, I really did enjoy the cinematography, and I tend to appreciate French art film whenever I get my hands on it. On a somewhat related note, are there any other Giallo films that you could recommend, perhaps something slightly more introductory?

On an unrelated note, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you're using schizoid where you mean schizophrenic. They're not actually related.

Are they? Didn't know it. Care to elaborate? I always used them interchangeably, I'd like to correct my misgivings.

Also, a few worthwhile Giallo movies - though I'm sure people in this and other threads will be happy to extend the list:

>Blood ans Black Lace
Started the genre and still is one of the most visually beautiful examples, though its plot suffers from a certain stylistic immaturity

>Suspiria
Classic of the genre, an incredible soundtrack (though most of them are) corroborated by Argento's uncanny eye for alien and beautiful shots. Seen it a fair few years, so I can't really elavorate much. On a related note, also watch Argento's Deep Red and the Animal Trilogy

>Danger: Diabolik
Giallo-ish but more of a surreal wogsploitation movie, backed by one of Morricone's weirdest soundtracks. The characters are taken from a crime comic that was incredibly popular here in Italy until the nineties.

>Berberian Sound Studio
Honorable mention, contemporary metamovie detailing the process of sound design during the filming of a Giallo/Supernatural Horror movie, all the while having a Giallo subplot.

Thanks. I love to see input and hear recommendations from authentic cinephiles. You really seem to know your stuff.

As to the difference between schizoid and schizophrenia, they actually describe two different mental disorders, though it's a really common and natural mistake to interchange them for what I think are pretty obvious reasons (it was also incorrect of me to say they're unrelated. It's more that they're only tenuously related and not interchangeable). Schizophrenia is what you think it is, but Schizoid Personality Disorder is a disorder in which its sufferers are socially and emotionally withdrawn to a pathological degree. They tend to have extreme difficulty relating with other people and have a tendency to 'live inside their own head.' (not to play armchair psychologist, but I suspect a lot of schizoids browse 4chan). That's an overly brief rundown, but I think you can see that it's fairly distinct from Schizophrenia.

Thanks for your input, I now see what you meant. I used to call schizouds either psychopaths or sociopaths, which betrays my lack of knowledge in the matter - I'll look into the matter. I don't think of myself as a cinephile, as one wouldn't call himself an intellectual if not to show off, but I won't say I didn't get a kick out of it so thanks.

Idk whats been posted (not lurking)
But I'm a big fan of the paranormal spoop

A few really good ones that never seem to get mentioned, prolly because most aren't into eastern horror but in case you are:
POV A Cursed Film
Ju-On: Shiroi Roujo (best in the series imo)
Rinne: Reincarnation
Tales of Terror from Tokyo (the movie, admittedly most tales aren't good but there are two so awesome that they make it pay off)
