Timeline of the 7-Hour War
Hour 1 : Portal Storm Begins. Xen creatures begin worldwide infestation. Sporadic seismic activity damages urban areas. Satellite communication becomes intermittently disrupted.
Hour 2 : Extreme EM atmospheric disturbances occur globally, destroying most electronic equipment, and crashes the entire global electric grid. Earth forces are unable to coordinate or provide effective defense.
Hour 3 : Over 400 of the worlds most populated cities are obliterated by relativistic bombardment via localized portals. Massive amounts ejecta create a "nuclear winter" scenario that will last for months. Over 2 billion people perish in this hour alone.
Hour 4 : Combine forces begin teleportation to Earth enmasse to engage resisting pockets of human population and to secure vital resources and strategic locations.
Hour 5 : Battles rage globally amongst Combine forces and badly outgunned human remnant armies. Casualty rates are high for human resistors.
Hour 6 : Two camps amongst elites and scientists arise debating whether the human race should go underground and resist or collaborate with invaders. Casualties continue to mount as humans cede territory after territory. The ability to fight back is exponentially waning for Earth's armed forces.
Hour 7 : A conditional surrender is negotiated by Dr. Wallace Breen, ceding control of Earth to the Combine in exchange for humanity's integration. Dr. Breen is effectively appointed administrator of Earth.

During the occupation, the combine Consul was offered support from a number of tributaries and rivals among the Humans, including the Russians, and the Chinese, Americans, and other nation-states and particularly influential organizations. In their advance, the Combine were evaded and ambushed several times by the humans they encountered. After eight months of small resistance and negotiations the combine Consul arrived in City 17 on November 8, 2000, where he took up residence and was welcomed by Dr. Breen et al. When news reached the combine Consul of the death of several Overwatch members during a failed revolt in City 13, he took the opportunity to take Dr. Breen captive in his own citadel and ruled through him for years. Appointing the new indigenous ruler was standard operating procedure for Combine in their expansion in the Orion Spur, so coercing Dr. Breen had considerable precedent, which might well have included those in Combine multiverse during the conquest of territory.

When the combine Consul left City 17, the new Earth capital, to return to the borderworld and deal with the expedition of other Combine Advisors, the Overwatch was left in charge. Overwatch plundered resources, suppressed all civil society and liberties and then persecuted and massacred the resistance. Humanity was enslaved and prevented from procreation in an ultimate attempt to create a transhuman population palatable to the Combine. The Overwatch oppression and intolerance of Humans precipitated rebellion by the population of City 17. When the collaborating administrator Dr. Breen, now seen as a mere puppet of the invading Combine, attempted to suppress the insurrection, he was overthrown by force and transported off-world. This process collapsed the Combine portal and destroyed the citadel in the process. The combine Consul , who by then had returned to City 17, and his confederates, had to fight their way out of the capital city after the Anti-Citizen Uprising in June, 2021. City-17 was subsequently destroyed by a dark energy event. The procreation suppression field dissipated and the human population began breeding again for the first time in 20 years. However, the Combine and Transhuman forces would return with reinforcements in a siege that led to the second fall of Earth a year later on August 13, 2022.

Human Assimilation into the The Universal Union
The Human resistance ceased to exist with the final Combine conquest of Earth in August 2022. The Earth had been composed of separate blocs that had either allied with or been conquered by the new administrator of Earth, and rendered tribute to the administrator while maintaining their internal ruling structures. Those polities now came under Combine rule, also retaining their internal structures of ruling elites, slave population, and governing structures largely intact.
The key to understanding how considerable continuity of pre-Conquest indigenous structures was possible was the Combine colonial utilization of the indigenous elites. In the colonial era, the indigenous elite were largely recognized as elites by the Combine colonial regime, with privileges including the elite Combine designation of Overwatch for human elites and their protection forces. To this day, the title of Overwatch Command is held by a Transhuman elite cadre. A few of the indigenous elite learned the combine Consul s' language. Combine advisors taught indigenous humans to write their own languages in Reformed Combine letters, which soon became a self-perpetuating tradition on Earth.

The first advisors on Earth, learned the dominant indigenous language of English, in order to pacify the indigenous people in their native tongue. Early advisors created texts in order to forward the project of Assimilation by convincing humans it was a progression of human evolution. Particularly important were the 2025 Combine-English dictionary compiled by the Transhuman Overwatch, and the 2023 English transhumanism propaganda manual for human instructors. The Combine Collective Forces and the Advisor order in the mid-21st century became increasingly hostile to cultural works by the indigenous, concerned that they were an impediment to the Humans' true assimilation. Zealous human collaborators persecuted any resistant to humanity's transhuman conversion, which was presented as a benevolent opportunity to be a part of the Combine.

The public education systems on Earth was abolished and replaced by weekly Combine indoctrination sessions. Most materials associated with previous human cultural practices, such as religious, philosophical and artistic materials, were forbidden. Marriage and parental rights were also abolished.
To reward off-world Synths, and transhumans, who participated in the conquest of Earth, the Combine Collective Forces authorized grants of native labor, in particular the assignment of entire indigenous communities to labor via the Overwatch administrative system. The indigenous were not chattel slaves under this system, bought and sold or removed from their home community, but the system was still one of forced labor based on Overwatch patronage. The indigenous people of Earth had practices rendering labor and tribute products to their polity's elites and those elites to the Overwatch on Earth, so the Combine system of mercantilism was built upon pre-existing patterns of patronage.
The Combine conquerors on Earth during the early colonial era lived off the labor of the indigenous humans. Due to some horrifying instances of overworked native humans dying en masse, some advisors suggested importing synth slaves to replace them which received even worse treatment from both humans and Combine alike.

Assimilation of Earth
The other discovery that perpetuated this system of indigenous forced labor were the extensive mineral and gas reserves discovered throughout the Orion Spur and other places in the Solar System that were worked for years by forced labor and contributed most of the wealth that flowed to the Universal Union. The Universal Union spent enormous amounts of these resources raising armies to fight the great interdimensional wars in the Combine multiverse.
In the 21st century, perhaps 240,000,000 Synths arrived on Earth. They were joined by 450,000,000 in the 22nd century. The majority of the Combine colonists were opportunists who augmented or made slaves of the humans, and were even encouraged to do so by the Universal Union during the earliest days of colonization. As a result of these amalgamations, as well as cybernetic and genetic augmentation and experimentation, hybrid individuals known as "Transhumans" came into being as the majority of the population on Earth in the centuries following the Combine conquest.
