Why do so many people experience this exact same thing visit them? They all describe a shadow figure, with a long trench coat wearing a coat. This is just too much. Why would people all over the world experience this exact same phenomina? What could cause this in the human brain? Why a top hat? Why a trench coat? Why is it a shadow that we see? Why do we all see the same thing
Shameless self bump

Thats what im saying. Id never heard of it before my girlfrjend told me she was seeing it. Then i did some research
>>17454295
I just used to have a dream about a man in a hat like that who was always in the shadows, I didnt know other people see him collectively as well.
>>17454295
>>17454192
My cousin dresses like this. Wide brimmed black hat, long faux leather trenchcoat. He doesn't shower much, is very pimply and loves anime.
>>17454297
I'm the guy who posted about seeing the hat man in my dreams and day dreams as a kid, i think it must just be an iconography that has slowly seeped its way into out collective consciousness, I doubt it means much at all.

We r legion. Expect us
>>17454322
But just like you and her, you guys had never heard of or seen him before. I dont know how it could manifest itself in our conciousness. Edpecislly this vary specifically dressed figure in particular
I seen something very similar to this pic tripping on acid for the first time a few weeks ago. I seen a figure like this city on my friends couch and when I looked at it, it would tilt its head down as if trying to hide its self. It freaked me out and I thought I was just imagining it but it wouldn't go away and I was talking to my friend and trying not to look in its direction then my friend said to new do thou see it sitting there too.
>>17454300
I've seen it in my dreams too standing in the shadows head tilted down and when I approach it it would look up at me with a huge grotesque smile.
>>17454353
movies, books etc it's a ,a manifestation of a common unsettling figure in western horror.

This film came out last year. It's not very good, but it features a number of people describing their experiences with sleep paralysis, many of which involve the Shadow Man and other similar versions. It's all just people telling their personal stories though. . . they don't interview any doctors or specialists or anything.
>>17454412
I made this thread directly after watching it lmao
>>17454192
Spooky
>>17454435
I liked that one guy's story about the cat sitting on his girlfriend's chest whispering terrible things to him, then she supposedly experienced the same thing from a different angle, with a Shadow Man instead of the devil kitty
Reminds me of this shit
>>17454192
Lol you fags realize we literally made this guy up a few years ago, right? Hold on I'll see if I can find the thread.
>>17454609
Nice!
>>17454609
There was a Coast to Coast about "shadow people" way back in 2001.
>>17454713
a ps1 game in 1998 called lsd has a shadow guy that can randomly appear and start chasing you while floating. its a dream walking sim.
>>17454192
I experience this shit myself too when I was younger I was watching TV late at night everyone was asleep and on the wall i saw a shadow wearing a hat exactly it scared the shit out of me I never knew what it was . But my cousins have reported seeing the same guy in the house.
I saw him when I did astral travel.
Turns out he was actually one of my spirit guides. Just talk to him and ask him some questions.
>>17454609
Yeps, in an /x/ drawthread, the artist even called himself "The Hatman"
He'll be proud of what he's started.
>>17455272
Yeah yeah, I bet he will. Pretty typical /x/ way to go forward. Have a good time with all that, you knuckleheads.
>>17454192
Yeah saw a 'ghost' just like this. Tbh I think shadows are often in this shape and you get this figure
Coat racks, hangers, railings etc. This thread did spook me tho.
>>17455442
For some reason I like hearing stories about this sort of thing.
>>17455456
I never knew it was a thing until this thread. I don't have much of a story to tell. It was a long time ago, I guess I was 10? Was lying in my bed in my room, which was directly across from my sisters. If both doors were open I could see into hers. Anyway, both lights were off and both doors were open. My sister always had a huge mess in her room with clothes everywhere. There was a coat rack near her door (why I said I probably imagined it) and boom. There he was. Looked like the 'socialite' trainer in pokemon a bit, but more shadowy. Top hat too. Was really freaky and my only 'paranormal' experience.
>>17455465
I pretty much skipped Pokemon. I've never seen any "shadow people", but I used to see dark shapes darting around in my peripheral vision at my old place. A few other people saw them as well. Also experienced sleep paralysis twice, but never saw any shadow business during that weirdness.
>>17454192
Holey crap! I saw this guy like 3 times in the woods with my friends as a child!
I used to share a room with my little sister. One night I woke up to hear my mother talking to her (she was sleeping in her bed that night) telling her no one was there and to go to sleep, but my sister insisted there was a man in our doorway.
I remember her talking to my mom about it the next day, too. A tall man wearing a coat with a hat. I read about him years later, heard the Coast to Coast AM, and now see this thread. Bizarre and very spooky.

The man in black is a popular cultural trope. This particular configuration is likely inspired by horror movie iconography and such.
Attached pic is the iconic shot from the Exorcist poster/advertising materials. One of many instances of this sort of image in pop culture.
>>17455723
Do you know where it started? Some anon placed it in '98, but where did it come from? I love weird stuff like this.
>>17455723
Oh and westerns, obviously. The figure of a man in a black hat and a black coat riding into town, spelling trouble for the people there, is fairly popular in the western genre. In turn, this genre has been a considerable influence on Western and specifically American culture.
Black is just a culturally significant color, we associate it with evil. Black and white dualism and all that.
>>17455738
The man in black? Like I said before I read your post, it has roots at least as far back as the old westerns. So I'd say 1998 is a bit late. Cultural images of similar dark and foreboding figures aren't hard to find before that though. Look at the early horror movies. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, from 1920, features a villain who wears a black cloak and a black hat. Speculative renderings of real world infamous figures such as Jack the Ripper also tend to include that iconic hat and cloak, donned by a figure bathed in shadows.
In general, black and white dualism stretches back about as far as human history does. Blackness and darkness represent the evil and the unknown. That's consistent throughout religious myths and fairy tales and all that. I think this image is just part of our cultural consciousness. Its foundation is in the deepest parts of cultural memory, and the modern incarnation is simply given a more defined form by the last few centuries of fiction and pop culture.
>>17455786
Sure, I feel no real disagreement with what you're saying. I often like to borrow terms like "collective unconscious", "genetic memory", "Akashic Records", etc to represent this question. That's a good point about Caligari & the Ripper. It seems easier to me to imagine the potential origins of the "big bad wolf" than this stupid hat-man image, if only because it's easy to imagine ancestors worrying more about being eaten by wolves due to the relative lack of security in the near past than about hat-people. It must have come from somewhere though, I assume, & I love digging into these things.

Wide-brimmed sun hats have been around for thousands of years: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petasos
...and so are long coats/robes.
I actually saw this fucker once as a child at night when I was fully awake. It appeared after an armed robbery of an apartment flat around my house which left a guy almost stabbed to death. I was staring outside from my window with horror and saw this thing floating in a dark corner of a wooded spot nearby. The silhouette was extremely out of place, its colour was blacker than the black of night and it looked like it was... bubbling? Slightly phasing in and out like something from a bad video feed.
To this day I wonder what the fuck these things are and where they come from...
>>17454412
That film scared the crap out of me. First film I've seen since I was a kid where I had to leave the lights on. Just the idea of those night terrors being infectious.

Britfag here.
My Aunt had an encounter 30 odd years ago.
Didn't know what it was at the time, she described it as looking like the character logo from a brand of sherry.
> Pic related.
Side note. They had a lot of problems with the house they lived in. I get the feeling these hat men / shadow people are drawn to distress and turmoil.
