The thing is, we can't go all that far into the lower regions of the earth due to massive amounts of heat and pressure. This makes it a possibility that there are lifeforms of one kind or another living in the subterranean parts of earth. I'm not saying that the whole "hollow earth" thing is real, but there could be life further into the crust or even in the mantle. I mean, there are entire ecosystems built around volcanoes at the bottom of the ocean, and certain kinds of bacteria and other similar lifeforms can survive extreme temperatures, as well as remain dormant for thousands of years or more.

I also just remembered an excellent example of a highly durable organism that could theoretically survive in the lower regions of the earth.

There is a book about this, called The Mole People. It's about homeless people who live underground, in tunnels and other spaces beneath cities. It's a very interesting book even if it's fictional in some places. I do believe that hidden in the fiction is some truth.
