No names.
Before things like torrents and tor, I used to use 2 programs to dl stuff like movies, music, porn etc. called "Limewire" and "Bearshare". Both were basically uncensored P2P, similar to torrents, sharing files directly between 2 peoples' computers with the program merely acting as a client... anyway..

Bearshare was pretty average in terms of content, music mainly iirc. Limewire, however, was the closet thing to a "Dark Web" at the time. You'd see all sorts of extreme things shared.. snuff, gore, cp, documents.. just random illegal shit. Neither had sections or a guide, the programs themselves were just search engines showing files shared from other peoples' computers.

Usually, if you were careful, you could tell what the bad shit was by the suspicious filename.jpg and avoid it, but not always. People are cunts. Viruses were rife. Both programs were high-risk. Most of the time, you never knew wtf you were downloading until you opened it.

Anyway, inevitably, I ended up getting a virus from one of the two, probably Limewire, that had (unknown to me at the time) installed a program on my computer that acted as a "seed" for fuck knows what. I was totally unaware, and continued to use both programs as normal....

..........

6 months later..

Sunday morning, 5am. Something woke me up.

I lay there for about a minute.. silence.. birds chirping.. then decided a piss was a good idea, so up I get... go for a piss.

I get back into bed and hear what sounded like people talking, so I sit and wait for a second, listening. Looks at clock, 5:12am. Silence. Fuck it. I lay back, resting my head on the pillow.

My eyes were just closing when.....
"BAAAAAANG!"

I sit up. "What the..."

..........
"CRAAAAASH!!!"
What I later realised was my front door didn't even survive 2 hits. I thought it was a wall collapsing desu. It felt like the whole house moved an inch to the left.

"POLICE!!! EVERYBODY STAY WHERE YOU ARE! DON'T MOVE, DON'T MOVE, DON'T FUCKING MOVE!"

It sounded like actual thunder and lightning coming up the stairs. Not gonna lie, I pissed myself. Sensory overload. My first thought was to get up, but the lower half of my body just decided ha nope, fuck you abdomen, arms and head we gonna wait for the spoopy spoops. I couldn't move, so I sit there arse glued to the pissy bed as the thunder squad approached...

"CRAASSHHH"
He looked like fucking Robocop I swear, except he was holding an MP5.
"YOUU! GET ON THE FLOOR NOW! DOWN DOWN ON THE FUCKING FLOOR MOVE NOW!!"
Not gonna lie, I pissed myself, again. My 3rd piss in 2 minutes. I throw my hands up in the air and freeze, still glued to the bed.

He points the gun at me and scans the room.

"YOU GET DOWN ON THE FLOOR NOW, NOW, NOW! MOVE! DOWN!"
I leap straight at him from the bed like Superman, arms still locked in the up position and still pissing. I land at his feet, grabbing his black trousers at the shins. He jumps back..
"ARE YOU XXXXXXXXX!" he asks. Shouts rather.

I take a deep breath and looked up...
"S-s-s-s-Sorry I'm in bed sorry sorry sorry"
That's exactly what I said. Word for word. I don't know why. He shouted again, I confirmed my name, and was soon in hand-cuffs and lifted down the stairs by 3 Robocops. There were around 10 of them in my house I'd guess. It was a blur desu. My life literally flashed before my eyes from my bed to the police station... work, gf, neighbours, parents, friends, breakfast, prison, wtf, wtf, wtf, wtf is happening..

As we approached the station I realised that the T-shirt I don't remember putting on was backwards and I had no socks on. I also stank of piss. I was getting my senses back and had stopped being a faggot. By the time I got to the front desk I was asking "wtf is going on here?".

I was questioned for 48 hours, before being arrested of.... I'll explain in a second. I was moved to a different police station due to appear at court when the truth came out and I was released without charge...

I'd been arrested for the kidnapping and possible murder of, upto, wait for it... 11 children. Not only that, I'd been accused of sharing 1gb of video and images of said.. tortures, basically. The terms used were "Actual Bodily Harm".

It transpired that, for the 6 months that my computer had been infected, it had been used as a "seed" for a persons HDD files. The person, it turns out, was a serial killer in Argentina. He's probably dead by now, but he'd been on the run since the 80's. He was never caught iirc.

Luckily for me, due to my stupidity, the virus was still happily running when the police took the PC. It was still sending and recieving data in police custody, so they were easily able to see what was happening, proving my innocence.

I didn't actually see any of the files that were shared but I'd hate to imagine. 1gb was huge in those days.

They kept the PC, not like I wanted it back anyway, and after the 3 days I returned home to wash my piss-stained sheets.

Needless to say, I've never used the "Dark Web" again.

Liked the story OP

Does anyone else have stories of random shit they came across by accident on the internet?

A few years ago when I had too much time on my hands and not much money to do anything, I downloaded TOR and a few other masking programs following an infograph I'd found on /b/.

I didn't find much. The silkroad looked interesting, but I wasn't gutsy or smart enough to try it. I found a 'sub-4chan' of sorts where the users were talking about how disillusioned they'd become about 4chan, and then cp.
Actually saw the name Daisy's Destruction thrown around a little bit... even those subforums that happily talked about swapping illegal content thought it was awful. A couple years later and I found out what it was and that the guy was caught. I hope he was caught because of TOR. Detestable types down there, really.

The oddest sub-content I'd found there was a whole 'site' devoted to a person recounting their personal relations with big cats. They owned a big cat sanctuary and apparently mated with all of them multiple times every week. Cheetas, panthers, etc. Biologically impossible, really. Very strange.

Didn't go back. Deleted all my programs after spending a few afternoons looking around. Seeing the cp got to me, really. Was dismayed to see 'bitcoin' getting popular as a mainstream currency because it really came from the darkweb to pay for shit like CP. Glad to know that it's mostly a honeytrap now.

lol. what a faggot. if you're too dumb to know when the cops are trying to entrap you, don't go online.

True story. Back when Friendster was a thing a girl claming to be 15 would talk to me all the time. She and I would IM each other on AIM (remember AIM?).

Well eventually, of course, she told me how much she wanted to fuck. And how she needed a 'real man.' in Her life.

I was like, yeah, i'll get in touch with you in a year when you're legal. Then she said anything she could think of to get me to met up with her. stuff like, 'come on I love anal sex.' I was like, sure when you're older. She stopped talking to me.

Wouldn't you know I later found out that cops were CRAWLING all over friednster pretending to be underage chicks to arrest people. That's what your tax dollars do, cops pick on people for POTENTIAL moral violations, while drug gangs and the mob run rampant.

What a fucking pathetic society we live in.

most of the stuff on limewire was used by law enforcement to track people. I heard they had an entire database of tens of thousands of recorded IPs and names of users who d/l'd illegal content.

early 2000's was like the wild wild west for p2p sharing. I was barely a teenager downloading all sorts of shit. Tons of shady .wav and .avi files that i never meant to see because of bogus file names...The amount of freedom you had on the internet back then was amazing. Feel bad for today's teen. They'll never know internet freedom.

>>
>>17398536
all i'm saying is that mIRC clients are the original p2p file transferring software. and people can create and erase chat rooms as they please. there's probably still file exchanges going on there.

If you understand what the net originally was, you realize the things that have more recently been created, lime-wire, tor, etc, are just brands for what has always existed: The ability to share anything, with anyone, anywhere. It's that simple.
>>
>>17398470

lol relax, it's not always the cops. I have done that in league of legends to get betas to buy me stuff.
>>
>>17397472

What I find interesting about the early internet is that it showed us how amazing, and how awful, humanity really was.

The TV did something similar during the Vietnam war. When the public could watch their draftee sons being blown up while they ate dinner. No wonder they protested.

The 'dark web' to me is just a code term for what people really seek, total disclosure about reality. How terrible are things really? How low can people sink? Well, the evidence is that people are capable of a lot things that were probably considered just sick fantasies at one time.

The net, when it was truly unfiltered, exposed the dark side of humanity in a way that had never been done before.

18 yr olds probably don't, by now...

Were those programs, like skins for IRC pretty much?
Was there a central server with all the listings or what?
I've used the programs (limewire, napster & kaaza[sp]) but I was a teenager and had legit no idea what was going on.
I think napster had a central server with copies of the files & that's how they got legally owned, right?

BTW you guys ever hear about the Toy Box Killer?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Parker_Ray

Apparently he kidnapped, drugged and then sexually tortured 30+ women (probably murdered them too) in a homemade dungeon he called his 'toy box.' He made videos of some of the rapes, and I actually saw a clip of one back in the 90s (aka the 'naughties').

It was on this news website called The Smoking Gun. in the late 90s they were more like liveleak than what they are now.

In the video there is a lady chained up to a table in a spread eagle position.her arms dangling above her in the air. She fully nude and there are a bunch of medical needles stuck through her nipples. Also a bunch of clothing pins are fasted on to her pussy lips.

There's a second nude lady in the vid, and she using two wires to shock the victim on the breasts and her gentiles. I think this second lady was the killer's wife. She allegedly played a role in the crimes.

Anyway, each time she shocked the girl, the girl would scream. I remember vividly how she would alternate the frequency of shocking her gentiles, so that the girl would never be sure when the next shock was going to come.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing at the time. But back in the 90s shit like that was just out in the open. Vid got taken down real quick tho. Not sure if its on the nets anymore.

I disagree. I don't think it's normal and humanity as a whole is better than that. Think about it. We are born with a weakness for young children and baby animals. Hince why we love cats. And it's instinct to want to protect children.

What the internet has done is let the crazies in. The mentally insane and every type of person which mental illness out there has suddenly been able to connect with each other. They feed off each other like a terminal cancer and encourage each other to go to extremes for money.

Humans aren't so dark. More often you'll see someone who will kill for a child than kill one or harm one. As for murder and snuff, once again same concept. The crazies eat the shit up and the rest of us, the majority of us are disgusted.

I used to smuggle hentai jpegs from the family computer to the IBM in my room via 3-and a half inch floppies.

Was also the first kid in town (that i knew of) to get a Windows PC with internet. We had 3 Apple II's prior to that (the ones with the green screens). Back then, around 93 (?) I would browse the net by just typing in shit i liked followed by .com as search engines were pretty novel at the time from what I recall.

Mid 90s was a really fun time to internet. It felt more, idk, "special". Probably romancing with the past to a degree though.
>>
>>17403784
>Mid 90s was a really fun time to internet. It felt more, idk, "special". Probably romancing with the past to a degree though.

At the risk of sounding like a hipster, it's because it wasn't as mainstream back then. We were computer nerds, now everyone uses the internet. It's everywhere, and computers and other devices are just as common as televisions and refrigerators. Back in the day, they always told you not to give out personal information, but now Everyone whores themselves out on Facebook. The mystery is gone.

Another thing, this "troll culture" that thrives here on 4chan hadn't really become a thing, and while there was no shortage of assholes or flamers or dumb kids, netizens were more into collaborating and helping each other. Things used to be more fun without companies trying to mass market everything and piracy was easier and slightly less virus-filled. It was the golden age of file-sharing that we'll never get back.

So yeah, anon, I'm waxing nostalgic too.
>>
>>17403803
>it wasn't as mainstream back then
Haha, ok, glad you said it for me. It's very true. It was more hobbyist back then. Same with video games to an extent.

One fun story I have: I got an Independence Day toy for my birthday, I assume in 1996. It was an alien inside that bio-armor and it came with a bonus game on floppy disk which I couldn't get to run on our PC (it would just be a glitchy red and black screen, like a bloody Snow Crash). So I gave it to my friend and apparently it fucked over their family computer. My mom went over to their house and tried to fix it while we played SNES. I like to think it was a haunted alien virus but the sad reality is my friend probably just got malware from looking at porn.

Supposedly they started prosecuting the people in those databases but stopped when they found out that in many cases the person who owned the computer was at work during the time of download and it was mostly kids looking for people their own age. i'd argue that humanity is capable of great good, and great evil. We can be both angels, or devils. And everything in between.

That's the very essence of what /x/ is about. Straining our perception of what the limits of what 'reality' is. As H.P. Lovecraft said:

>"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far."

I agree. There was definitely a great feeling running dos and playing games in the early morning as kid that I just don't get anymore.

but as for file sharing, I feel like the golden age was late 00's and early 10's as ddls existed of nearly anything besides large files. When they started cracking down on this when I feel like file sharing became shit.

Nothing I saw on the internet but..

I had bought a used DSi some years ago from a Gamestop. It was great and came with its own SD card, but not the factory card. It must have come from a small camera or something like that. Anyway about a year after buying it, I am at a friend's house and he takes note of the SD card and suggests we look and see what's on it using his computer.

The pictures started out taken by the DS camera of some girl trying the different filters and effects provided by the DS camera. There were several of these, all pretty generic.

Then came some pictures that were obviously from an actual camera. Family photos, pictures of a house being renovated, things like that. I wonder how this SD card came to be inside a DSi but oh well.

After the big collection of pictures from that family, came something completely different. There weren't many left, and the first one we opened was of this little hispanic-looking girl, very young perhaps 8-10 years old, wearing only a pair of panties, standing in front of a white sheet. The camera slowly panned up and down her, and she looked very scared and demure. It was really creepy to see. We didn't watch the entire video, instead immediately agreed to wipe the entire SD card and any trace they left on the computer. I hadn't really thought about it much since then.

I know it's not scary but it was really unnerving to be in possession of something like that inadvertently without knowing.

You know "millennials" is anyone born between the early 1980s and 2000, right?
>>
>>17398956
I found early 80's playboys in granddad's house an it was one of the greatest moments of my life.
Now these youngins just type huge titties into google and they have porn that I could have only dreamed of.
I'm mad but at the same time isn't this why we strive to advance tech? To make sure our kids have better lives than we ever could?

I started using WinMX for downloads but eventually hit the chat feature and that became a huge deal in my life for years. It's how I met my wife (been with her for almost ten years), so you could say that WinMX changed my life in a huge way.

This is my cousins scary story. I just happened to be there.
>Uncle warns cousin about dling illegaly
>He discovers how to do it
>Gets a bunch of Yugioh and Dbz/Green Day Mp3s (I have no idea why he didn't use google for 2/3 of those, he's dumb AF. He actually just lost half a finger cuz he was drunk and using a table saw, that's how dumb he is)
>Uncle finds "CP" in the files
>Maximo Autismo Cousin fesses up
>Uncle goes in to turn the computer to his cop buddies fearing prison sex
>30 mins later 2 cops and a detective bust open the door with uncle in cuffs
>Force me and cousin on floor and cuff us cuz were being arrested for distribution of cp
>Call B.S. Cuz I'm just there and didn't do shit
>Get carried into car while cousin pleads for his life
>Cop tells me to respect the badge and try's to intimidate me by telling me about prison
>Tell him to call my dad cuz I'm a little scared but call him a tubby at the same time
>he tells me he helped uncle stage all this to teach a lesson and calls my dad
>Dad comes and punches my uncle and a cop for being stupid and traumatizing kids
>>
>>17407018
>Dad comes and punches my uncle and a cop
>and a cop

With no repercussions whatsoever?
>>
>>17407018
My dad took us to a pizza buffet and blockbuster to rent a movie afterwards.
My cousin was too scared to touch a computer for about a year, he wouldn't even play runescape.
"Java might install a pedo virus"

After talking to my Aunt year later, I discovered the "Cp" was from lewdish screenies of the girl in Leon The Professional. Uncle Tardo thought it was from a child porn snuff film.
>>
>>17397486
My neighbor got a wake up call by cops after I helped him with his wifi.

Kept the passwords for everything and stored a shit ton of illegal docs on his HDD.

Was a funny day.
>>
>>17407036
You're a prick.
>>
>>17407022
Nah.
My dad threatened to report them all.

To explain a little bit. Before the department cleaned house, most of the police were highschool dropouts and jock types. Most of them couldn't even cut it in the army. So military/ex military are held in higher regard than most cops.
It went
1. Military/Vets
2. fire fighters/Paramedics/Above average Detectives who actually did their job.
3.your average goober beat cops.
The detective did say he'd arrest my dad but never did after he saw how scared me and my cousin were.

The implausible was the norm.
I seriously dont blame you though, I listen to my dad tell me stories about people from there and look back into stories of my own past and wonder "how? Why? Whaa..?"

Let's just say, theres a lot of people there who would follow the old how to make crystals guide if presented with it.

I really really really really do not understand this. I mean yes, I guess you live in the states, so muh privatization and muh mandatory minimums but if "torture" photos are indeed illegal to share then how do sites like goregrish and best gore(which I myself have contributed to) do they thang? and ISIS shares on twitter ... so um.

I *do* believe that yes, you were indeed arrested as your account is realistic(those who have NOT been through it *personally*, themselves, do not seem to realize how traumatic and just generally fucked up it can be, and they certainly do not mention such a thing) but I'm having trouble buying the rest of your story. I'm gonna go with you were never at risk of actually being charged but please, do enlighten us if you have further information that may help to clarify...
