Answer to why no stars. Those spots of light are microscopic, probably too small for the grains in the film to pick up. The reason you can see stars on earth is because the refraction of the atmosphere widens the detailess point of light. Which is why you only see a blob, never an actual star like the sun through a filter.

The reason you can't see stars on the moon is because those picture were taken during the 'day time', when it's receiving a lot of light from the sun. If you're getting a shitload of sunlight, and that light is reflecting off the surface in addition to being bright in its own right, then it's going to blot out the light from the stars. You don't need an atmosphere to diffuse the light if you have something as bright as the sun shining directly at you.
