You could tell there was something suspicious going on because there was a certain hostility from people trying to shut down discussion that was not the natural "OP is a faggot" I'd grown used to from 4chan. Around that time, popular cospiracy forums like ATS had been already infiltrated by the first wave of shills, and there was talk at the time that these shills had begun to post on /x/.
