Greetings, and welcome to The /x/ Files, the weekly news digest for 4chan's Paranormal board. Every Sunday, we take a quick snapshot of the mysterious world around us and bring it, in an easily readable magazine format, to the board. I am The Editor, the anonymous creator of this idea and collector of the news that will be following below. In the interests of legitimacy, I will be using a secure tripcode to post the thread; once the posts are completed, I will take the tripcode off and return to my anonymity.

It's Valentine's Day! I hope everyone has or will be spending a lot of money on purchasing crass commercialized products on the one day of the year earmarked for showing affection, rather than taking the opportunity to show it to your significant other every day! We've got a spate of great stories, the usual radio roundup and podcast paraphanalia, and a very speciak Editor's Note. As for me, well, I'm gonna go fap to X-Tan again. Foreveralone.jpg All this and more in Issue Fourteen of The /x/ Files!

Scientists Detect Gravitational Waves for the First Time

Researchers at the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), a pair of ground-based observatories in Hanford, Washington, and Livingston, Louisiana, have revealed that they have for the first time in history observed the warping of space-time, generated by the collision of two black holes located over one billion light years from Earth. First proposed by Albert Einstein as a consequence of his General Theory of Relativity back in 1916, gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of space-time that carry energy across the universe, and scientists have been attempting to detect them for 50 years.

Proffesor Karsten Danzmann, from the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, said the detection was one of the most important developments in science since the discovery of the Higgs particle, and on a par with the determination of the structure of DNA. "There is a Nobel Prize in it - there is no doubt," He said. "It is the first ever direct detection of gravitational waves; it's the first ever direct detection of black holes, and it is a confirmation of General Relativity because the property of these black holes agrees exactly with what Einstein predicted almost exactly 100 years ago."

Birds of Prey Found Deliberately Starting Fires

Black kites and brown falcons in Australia have reportedly been observed starting bush fires in an effort to smoke out small animals.

Normally when there is a bush fire small animals are forced out of hiding and fall victim to birds of prey and other predators. Small fires often attract so many birds that there is insufficient fleeing prey for all, so a bird that was being beaten to its lunch might benefit from starting a new fire with less competition.

Robert Gosford, a lawyer whose extensive work with Indigenous people in central Australia inspired an interest in their culture, started to hear reports of black kites (Milvus migrans) and brown falcons (Falco berigora) picking up sticks burning at one end and dropping them into unburnt territory. The accounts came both from Indigenous people in northern Australia and from non-indigenous firefighters, park rangers and people charged with conducting early dry season burns to prevent the build-up of flammable material.

The reports suggest arsonist raptors can carry sticks at least 50 and possibly up to 500 meters without the fire going out or singeing the bird, explaining cases where small blazes have unexpectedly jumped fire breaks.

Titanic II Reportedly Being Built

In a callback to Issue One, claims of a replica of the Titanic, the world’s most famous “unsinkable” ship - which struck an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage in 1912 - is under construction. Australian mining magnate and politician Clive Palmer is at the helm of the ambitious project to faithfully recreate the luxury ship, which will be about 13 feet wider to meet current regulations. More importantly, it will carry enough lifeboats for every passenger and its hull will be welded, not riveted, just in case it comes across a rogue iceberg.

However, reports about the vessel are unverified and sketchy at best. The article which 'broke' the story this week, in the Independent, ia almost verbatim from an article published last September by the Belfast Telegraph; since that news report there has been no further news about the project, no contract to build has been signed, and no shipyard has begun construction on the vessel. Furthermore, the announcement of the delay was made as far back as May of 2014. And Clive Palmer himself may be facing criminal charges for moving money from his mining business, which is massively in debt, into his self-titled political party. People in the cruise ship trade are doubtful that "Titanic II" will ever be built.

In spite of this mountain of contrary evidence, the maiden voyage of Titanic II is planned for 2018, from Jiangsu, China - where the ship is allegedly being built - to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

Smart Appliance Might Soon Be Spying for the NSA

On Tuesday the 9th of February, the director of US national intelligence, James Clapper, appeared before a Senate committee and made clear that the internet of things - the many devices like thermostats, cameras and other appliances that are increasingly connected to the internet - are providing ample opportunity for intelligence agencies to spy on targets, and possibly the masses. And it’s a danger that many consumers who buy these products may be wholly unaware of. "In the future, intelligence services might use [the internet of things] for identification, surveillance, monitoring, location tracking, and targeting for recruitment, or to gain access to networks or user credentials,” Clapper said, as part of his annual “assessment of threats” against the US.

While Clapper’s comments are generating new publicity for this privacy worry, the government has known about the potential to exploit these devices for a long time. The then-Director of the CIA, David Petraeus made clear that intelligence agencies would use theinternet of things to spy on people back in 2012, saying, "Items of interest will be located, identified, monitored and remotely controlled through technologies such as radio-frequency identification, sensor networks, tiny embedded servers, and energy harvesters - all connected to the next-generation internet using abundant, low-cost, and high-power computing."

Author and persistent Silicon Valley critic Evgeny Morozov summed up the entire problem with the internet of things and “smart” technology in a tweet last week:

In case you are wondering what "smart" - as in "smart city" or "smart home" - means:

Surveillance
Marketed
As
Revolutionary
Technology

I kind of agree with this. This really is a quality weekly post. I look forward to it every week. Now i see there's also an /x/ radio podcast. It's pretty impressive considering these people come from /x/.
Also, if it is possible to improve the quality of threads and posters in this sub-forum, it's going to take a time to achieve that. We just have to be patient and strive for better quality.
