You know why looking at a jellyfish or pine cone barely registers to you? Because we know they exist and see them on a regular enough basis. If eldritch whatsits were around they'd lose almost all their mystique.

This is why the unknown has such an allure. We crave newness that we just don't get anymore. Think about how integral tomatoes are to Italian dishes. You think Italian food, you think tomatoes in there. But tomatoes are New World food. So prior to 1500 Italians never once ate a tomato. What was alien as fuck 500 years ago to them is so common now we don't even think about it.

I live in the countryside and we actually have pine trees on our property. While you're busy raking leaves every fall, I have to deal with all manner of pine cones. Every year, I remind myself that nature is full of all manner of things, in all manner of shapes and sizes. Pine cones are actually seed pods. They're the flowers, and they have their own pollen. And their shape is unique, interesting, and spiky. If a year passes without you picking up a pine cone to appreciate it, your life must be so dreadfully dull that I don't have any problem seeing how you could agree with that anon.

You're probably the kind of judgmental fool that thinks I must be a hippie nature freak, but no. I study AI in my spare time. I fantasize on a regular basis about designing, building, and living on generation ships. There's not a single part of this world that isn't made up of such a complex series of physical processes that it'd blow anyone's mind if they bothered to think about it. I just happen to appreciate the problem complexity of nature. It's interesting.
