Clearly you weren't old enough to remember the time before 9/11 very clearly. Throughout the 70s-90s, the Twin Towers were like the symbol of New York. Not to mention the fact that they were the largest buildings in the US, and were considered a symbol of the very ideology that the terrorists were trying to attack.

I'm not going to elaborate any further (Hi NSA! Hi despressed/deranged 4chan cucks!) but there are way more obvious targets than famous tower(s) to blow up if you're really interested in damaging the US.

My point being the 9/11 attacks were meant to get a reaction, not to actually cripple the US in any functional way.

As for why the WTC was chosen to make the statement is simple. That shit dominated the NYC skyline. Talk to somebody from NYC who was old enough to remember the attacks. Aside from all their memories of the day itself, they'll tell you about being struck by not seeing the Towers anymore, because you could see them in a lot of places. They were damn prominent.
