/x/ can be fun, but keep a level of scientific objectivity with regards to spirituality. An organic human can never be immortal. Your brain will wear out eventually. Everybody dies, and once you die, you won't have any consciousness; when brain activity ceases, you're gone forever. There's no afterlife, there's no immortality, there are no spirits and there's no such thing as transcending your physical form because you're nothing but a physical form. Your thoughts and emotions come from neurons and gray matter that physically exist inside your head.

Theoretically, if you could take another body after death and live on, how would your emotional state fare? What do you think, if your life span were extended would you not be more even toned and flat?

Seriously though. You can think about it this way, every cell itself is a living organism, they just "decided" to group up for survival's sake and specialise in different things, like cells in a lung or cells in the eye. Pretty much what a human society is, it's easier to survive in groups and it's more efficient if everyone specialises in something. The "mind" is just a group of cells in the brain that has been entrusted with making decisions, like a monarch or something. You can make decisions but most things and the information you get are decided by others. People especially nowadays just forget about it, probably because of how comfortable life got. But as the group of cells in the frontal lobe your job is just survival and reproduction. Don't think too hard past that.

Either way; Cells to not decide to group, they do not decide anything. They do not think, they are not sentient. They form this way because they are an amalgam of parts that make up a larger being. If you reduced all life to simply that, and nothing more than that you'd come up with the answer that sentience is intuitively false, and that your actions are predetermined by predictable chemical reaction. There are many things that this concept alone cannot account for.
