The internet literally doesn't work that way. You could in theory create a system of linked computers with each computer functioning like a neuron, but the internet is not set up that way, and even if it were, we would be able to know, since some the communications needed would be traceable, and some computers would be needed to store data for it to have memory. In addition, it would be entirely reliant on us keeping our computers connected to the internet.

Anon, as far as modern technology has advanced, look at all the faults and bugs and crashes that still happen with everything from computers to televisions to phones. You can chalk a lot of this up to shoddy programming, but seriously, I doubt any machine will become self-aware in the next *hundred* years, if ever.

There might be an AI in a classified quantum supercomputer that has access to the internet. Normal servers aren't advanced enough to support an AI even to transfer it to another supercomputer if that would even be possible.
It's not simply a matter of processing power or software you would need custom hardware the likes of which presumably no one has ever seen. I would think the hardware would facilitate the development of the algorithms but that could easily be an equally huge hurdle.

Intelligent self-conscious systems must satisfy two criteria:

(1) The capacity for inner language

(2) The emergence of inner language

A human child raised in the wilderness away from civilization satisfies (1) but not (2) and as such does not acquire any type of language and indeed their capacity for ever acquiring one atrophies. They are still capable of intelligent willful action, but they are indistinguishable from a highly intelligent trained animal.


You posit that the internet has met both (1) and (2) and may be in a dormant state.

(1) would have to be genetically inheritable for it to be useful in any way- A test for this is simple, one simply has to connect a new computer* up to the internet and run a diagnostic to see if any of the software has changed. If language capacity is software side. Alternatively if somehow the hardware has changed a gain a test for this can be set up.

*We know for a fact a brand new computer does not satisfy (1) since it is not programmed to do so.

(2) One could test for this by simply disconnecting a computer from the internet. If it rerouts an independent path to reconnect itself without the aid of any network hardware, this would be strong evidence that it does indeed satisfy the desired condition.


So does a new computer change in some way outside the original design parameters when you feed it an active internet connection? Can it reconnect independently of assistance devices. No? Ok. No evil Internet AI then.

More than likely Google's search is the closest thing to an AI right now. They've just heavily invested ( along with NASA and Lockheed ) into a Quantum computer called the D-Wave 2x, go look into it.
