It was a shit game, that's why.

Cool concept for people that like Lovecraft, but you might be surprised to know that most people don't like him. He's been rebranded as a racist asshole who wrote really pretentious stories full of racism.
>>
>>17068891
Man who gives a shit about an auteur's personality or the politics associated with, a work should be viewed only through the merit of the work itself.
Besides no one can deny the massive influence his work had on a very specific aesthetic in horror.

It's definitely one of the franchises that people list first next to Resident Evils and Silent Hills when asked for horror recommendations, but I'd say the last two entries are pretty overlooked.
One never made it out of Japan officially and the second that just released on Halloween is a WiiU exclusive so I don't expect amazing recognition for it.

Anyway, any good creepy RPG maker games similiar to Corpse Party or Ib?

Even though it's pretty recent I see absolutely nobody talking about it, Soma was incredible. From the variety of monsters and situations, thick oppressive atmosphere and the best use of an angler fish in anything ever it's a great game. Wandering about at the bottom of a massive sea trench towards the end is terrifying.

Kek. He's now essentially an unknown figure from another century. In 50 years no one will know who Lovecraft was, because he was a racist prick who wrote shitty stories while pretending he was some "master race" fuck.

>Signed by more than 2,500 people, the petition asked organisers to make the acclaimed African American science fiction writer Octavia Butler the model for the trophy, rather than Lovecraft, because while the creator of the Cthulhu mythos “did leave a lasting mark on speculative fiction, he was also an avowed racist and a terrible wordsmith”, and “many writers have spoken out about their discomfort with winning an award that lauds someone with such hideous opinion”.

The Crooked Man and Mermaid Swamp are great. The creator did such a good job making the eeriest, most uncomfortable atmosphere he could in each. They also both make you feel like you're being stalked the entire time. Sound effects are great and both are free.
>>
>>17076565
>a terrible wordsmith

Oh come on call him racist all you want but don't disparage the guys writing. The thing with Lovecraft is that a lot of people love to use the term Lovecraftian (so, no, he isn't an unknown figure because that word is so common and when people look it up they find out who he is) and say they're inspired by his work, but have not actually read it. I have, and his racism doesn't even show up in his work, especially not enough to make it unreadable if you have a sensitive opinion. The people who made that decision have never read his work. Also, book awards are completely meaningless.

Liberals in the creative industry are the new conservatives in the arts from the 30s and 50s. If they find something distasteful, they want it censored, fuck creative and expressive freedom, you know, the things liberals in that era actually fought for and pushed the envelope the artists COULD have the freedom to express what they wanted, no matter if it offended someone.

Yeah, I have played through it a few times, and it really falls apart once you get to the modern times. Great concept, poorly executed.

The world also feels extremely empty and shallow, but I always found that added to the atmosphere, the place felt so lifeless and depressing. I'm sure it was unintentional, but it's still a really creepy game.
>>
>>17078014
Never played Mermaid Swamp, but The Crooked Man sucks IMO. The maker makes one of the biggest mistakes you can make in a horror game. At the end of each chapter, you fight the monster and win. Right around the time you're in that hotel(IIRC) and you fight the monster and beat the monster's ass with a crowbar(IIRC), any horror the game might've had disappears real quick.

Tomb Raider 1-3, those games are as scary as they come. One of the only games where you actually feel as though you are exploring ancient ruins filled with evil. They just get the atmosphere so right, the only games that can compare is the Thief series. It's a shame the modern games are such generic garbage, because the first few were genuinely awe-inspiring and pretty terrifying. There is a constant sense of danger and death, but you're so intrigued to push on and find out just what the hell lies ahead.

For some reason Oblivion always felt creepy for me. At the surface everything is peaceful but you can feel that something is not right. It's hard to describe. Maybe it's beacause the contrast between the casual landscape and the nasty shit in the dungeons, cellars etc. Is anyone else felt the same?

>>
>>17078038
You can't say his racism didn't show up in his writings, Shadow over innsmouth is basicly about race mixing at the end of the day. But that doesn't mean it isn't a damn good story, slowly turning into a horrid fish creature because of what your parents did still makes your skin crawl even if you don't share lovecraft's thoughts on niggers.

>>17076565
This is prime, SJWs are replacing Lovecraft, a man who revolutionized horror writing, for a literal nobody who happens to be black. If those knot heads could do any thinking on their own they would do research into Lovecraft and find out that later in life he gave up on his racist views and even felt remorseful about how he thought.

>>17068852
Not to give any credence to our resident tumblertard but call of Cthulhu really has aged like milk, and it's main appeal is for people who get rock hard thinking about great old ones. Not to say it didn't have it's great moments, like running away from the shoggith. My main problem with it is that it's super buggy and prone to crashing.
>>
>>17078930
>>17079029
Oblivion was a strange one. The graphics (at the time) were good enough to really help immersion, but everything still looked strange. The art style was realistic, but the graphics weren't quite good enough to really pull that off.

Couple it with Bethesda horrible NPCs who were all ugly as sin, and the general setting and creatures. I think they all worked together to make it sort of off-putting visually. I think it's mostly a case of the "uncanny valley" though.

Skyrim was better graphically, which helped it feel more organic. They also did a better job at making the NPCs look human (not too ugly but not perfect) and didn't zoom in on their faces every time you talked to them.

The Argonians in Skyrim scare me a little still, they're just so bizarre looking. And their eyes are so piercing.
>>
>>17076565
>he was a racist prick

jesus christ, go back to tumblr kiddo
>>
>>17079084
Nah. I'm not that anon nor am I particularly SJW but Lovecraft remained fairly racist throughout his life. He mellowed a bit, relatively, and he was against the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but he still remained pretty racist. That's why his marriage with that Jewish woman didn't work out. Speaking of Jews, while he thought Hitler was being a bit overzealous with wanting to kill all of them, he was otherwise pretty openly pro-Hitler, agreed that something needed to be done about the Jews in Europe, and, while he didn't think Jews should be rounded up and exterminated en masse, he did think the US should do that to black people IIRC.

Also IIRC at the time he wrote them, his works didn't get much attention. Honestly, I like a lot of his work just fine, but I do think he's massively overrated now. Honestly, a lot of the modern Lovecraft super-popularity just seems to boil down to people liking le epic octopus man.

The controls in The Thing were fucking cardboard and the voice acting was less than believable. Beyond that, the camera angle took away from the whole intended scary feel of the game.

considering some of the completely non scary games on there (parasite eve, i love, but really?) im fairly astonished that doom 3 isnt on there. headphones in a dark room helps make the game really unnerving, mainly because the audio was great.
>>
>>17078930
Cyrodiil was definitely intended to appear as a stark contrast to the very morbid hellscape of Oblivion. So I guess the feeling of everything being 'too peaceful' was intended, as later in the game, a nice walk through the woods could turn into an attack from trans-dimensional demonic monstrosities.

If its about getting spooped, STALKER is always the way to go for me. It has an extremely thick atmosphere, you actually feel constant discomfort when roamimg the zone at night with your headphones on. Everything wants to kill you, at any time some stray bullet, some missed anomaly or some hungry mutant could fuck your shit up. Every step has weight behind it, dying is fast, everything you see and hear is misleading and will keep you on the edge constantly. Your weapons might jam, you might not have what you need to cross some point, you might even starve if you are not careful.
And all of this can be amplified tenfold by mods.

And even when you get used to roaming the zone, there are always factors you could never predict, considering the game is highly randomized and the engine is vulnerable to bugs. I played the shit out of all games and to this day it occassionaly makes me shit my pants simply by being a highly unpredictable and mysterious adventure in post-apocalyptic soviet landscapes, which to top it all off actually exist in that form.

Why can't anyone ever gib sauce on this game?
>>
>>17085143
I'd ask on /v/, or even /k/, they both love Stalker.

I played SoC vanilla first, and then with the "Complete" mod (back in 2009 or so). It was pretty fun vanilla, and was a little better with the Complete mod, though I replayed it recently with the Lurk mod and it was amazing. Visuals, gameplay, everything is top notch with Lurk.

As for CoP, I played it vanilla and then I think with some other mod. Again, pretty good vanilla, then I replayed it with Misery. Misery is a really comprehensive overhaul and adds a lot of interesting features. Some people complain about having to eat so often, and it's hard, but you get used to it. As long as you go and either kill some people and get guns to sell, or go hunt anomalies then you'll always have enough cash to buy enough food to survive. Most enemies drop food and ammo so as long as you progress the story you'll be fine as well.

I'd always recommend playing through the Stalker game vanilla because any mod you get is going to make the game a lot less forgiving. They remove signs of anomalies or make them more hidden, they make ammo more rare. In CoP, Misery lets you starve to death, which isn't in the vanilla game. Lurk for SoC adds blowouts, which are deadly. But they add cool shit too, night vision, more weapons, more ammo, more mutants to kill.

Well, I think the /vg/ general has a very solid database on STALKER, they even have a huge mega folder filled with mods and merges.
Personally I used to play SoC somewhere at a time where Oblivion Lost was the shit, but it is a really buggy and messy experience, which I still enjoyed. AMK is a mod you cant do anything wrong and probably the most popular with and that can be extended with weapon mods and weather overhauls. There are also a ton of new mods that came out "recently" but I am not really informed on them.
As for CoP, I used to play Misery, which was fun enough, but not advisable for a beginner with its frustration factor coming from its absolutely bullshit economic system which will make you starve if you do not murder half of the zone. I had tons of fun with the Sigerious mod, because it gave you fun tools and spiked up the difficulty, without gimping you like Misery did, also some additional maps which wete pretty spooky sometimes.
Only played vanilla CS and did not really enjoy it, this game is certainly not for me.

Stay away from Complete, this stuff is underwhelming at best.
>>
>>17085143

Oh and yes, you should probably play CoP vanilla first.
(Although I did not myself, because the story of CoP is not exactly fascinating and the biggest fun of it is to fuck around in the zone)
>>
>>17064513
I really loved it. Bloodlines even more so obviously but Redemption isn't horrible even though it's unfinished. Mods add to the experience, just like with BL. Cool to see stakes actually used in this one.

There is some good stuff in here. Maybe you can help me out.

I'm looking for an old PC game where you are actually in a virtual reality all along. You are being "taught" to be a horrible person before you go out into the real world. You torture people, betray them, kill someone's kid in front of them. Or you can choose to try and be a good moral person and fight the sim, usually unsuccessfully. It's an old game with a generic title, like The Harvest or some such. I tried googling but not turning up much. It uses gory FMV iirc. But it might be more like waxwork and use animation in a realistic style for the time, and I'm just remembering it as realistic from when I was a kid. Anyone?

>moves away to build new life
>wife gets sick and loses business
>is in a tight spot with his work himself

I can remember the early 90's 3D games being creepy. Everybody and his grandma were trying to create a Wolf3D/Doom clones. Most of them were terrible but also scary. Super weird monster design, strange level atmosphere and the fact everything in the game is out to kill you made it often weird and unnerving to play.

A lot of those games weren't made by companies back then but individuals, making those games a personal nightmare in entertainment form.

Flood.jpg
49KB, 640x480px
When the Flood first showed up in Halo, I pretty much just stopped playing it for about a month. Which was quite annoying, because it was unparalleled fun up until then. The whole level was such a massive shift and then the Flood appearing, almost from another game, shook my young self to his very core.

Up until that point, the game's brightly coloured, with massive vistas, and enemies that crack jokes and make silly noises, all accompanied with a (most) enthralling and uplifting orchestral score. In fact, I think the mission before the Flood has you on a tropical island, hanging out with a platoon's worth of marines, driving about in a warthog, which is basically a dune buggy with more daka.

But the Flood have eaten all the marines, or driven them insane, they've killed all the silly enemies, and now they're trying to club you to death with a gooey tentacle, or literally crawl inside you. And the epic scenery's gone, you're either in a claustrophobic swamp, or a tomb-like warren of corridors. Everything's gone to shit, basically, and my brain couldn't handle it.
I think about Halo /waaay/ too much.
Virtual Reality is just becoming available for home use. It has a ways to go, but you can clearly see its uses even if you just own a Cardboard.

I picked up a Freefly VR a few months ago, and there are some pretty cool, though basic, games for it.

If anyone gets Cardboard or something like it, download Sisters. It's a very short game but in virtual reality it's creepy.
>>
>>17086539
No... you're pretty spot on. That's pretty much how halo 2 starts out and halo 3 starts out. Nice open, beautiful worlds, then the flood show up and everything turns to darkness, you get crammed in small corridors either on a ship or space station, just trying to survive and get out alive. Even in Halo 3, when the swords of shanghelios show up after the level The Storm, the level begins dark and grueling, and even though most of the map is pretty open it feels crammed and dreadful. The flood are pretty terrifying. Halo 4 and 5 have felt more sci-fy and way boring without the flood.
>>
>>17086539
I was thinking this too. The flood in Halo 1 was a good twist to the game. It was creepy, and from that mission onwards the maps became eerie.
They even removed other species of aliens from the game to make the flood a unique twist.

It's not a scary game. It just has archetypal horror monsters and gothic settings in it.

Castlevania did the same thing, but I don't think anyone would call Castlevania games scary.

He talks a lot about decadence and degeneration due to the falling of social standards. He was nostalgic for what he thought to be the English tradition, literary and otherwise.

I like reading Lovecraft because of his imagination, not for any social commentary. He may have been lonely, drug-addicted, bigoted, and a shut-in, but he had a great mind.

This game never gets mentioned in any thread like this at all and it's definitely worth a mention.

It's DreadOut, an indie game on Steam. You play a girl called Lin and all you have is a phone with a camera and flash. It's similar to Fatal Frame in the sense that you have to take pictures of the ghosts/enemies to remove them. The atmosphere is perfect, very tense and at times it strikes fear in your gut. There's puzzles to solve to progress to the next parts of the game. It's only £10.99 ($16.37) and totally worth it.

I wish I knew how.

I feel you bro. It would have been awesome.

I played it for 5 minutes and was genuinely afraid to move in the game. Frozen to the spot. I never even saw the ghost. Never felt that in a game before.

The scariest 2 moments in a game, for me, were:

1, Call of Ctulhu, the Hotel chase.
The first few times I played that level I was so angry at my own lack of balls that I switched off the PC. I was shaking with adrenaline.

2, Farcry 4

Pathologic is fantastic but it's not really a horror game at all- there's like one 2 minute section in it that's spooky and it's a >70 hour game.

The Forbidden Siren series is one that hasn't been mention so far. Amazing games, 1 and 2 are the best but Blood Curse is decent too.

Oh god yes

F.E.A.R. is for me the worst weird ambient you could get.

That liveless town. that level where you're on a big building, watching at all those lights on the city, but something is off

Everywhere you go, there's no one except you and the Replica army
>>
>>17064475
the two first levels are the best ones...after that...IMO the game kinda gets slower and the story becomes boring

I remember hearing how Lovecraft looked into his family's genealogy and found out he was part Welsh. Apparently this fact horrified him. It seems to fit in with his stories:
>young man is curious about nondescript thing.
>finds out horrifying truth.
>is unable to live a normal life afterwards.

>>
>>17082829
Come on, you clearly haven't played it. And if you have you didn't get past Rom, the Vacuous Spider, did you?

Even before then, there's plenty of Lovecraftian stuff

>A sort-of dream world/alternate dimension accessed by dreaming.
>Giant spider things with what is basically Cthulhu's head
>The whole settlement-with-a-dark-secret-and-strange-religious-cult shtick
>Fish-Man hybrids
>Cosmic alien deities called 'Great Ones'.

To be fair, it reminds me more of Clark Ashton Smith than Lovecraft, but whatever, they clearly had Lovecraft firmly in mind when making it.

Although it wasn't overlooked at release I still think dead space two was giving too much of a "not as good as the first" rep. Dead space one was scary in the raw new experience and post assault way where as dead space2 was more "we're watching this unfold and evolve kind of way. Plus, looking out of the city at the expanse of the moon colony and space was almost depressing. And that needle in the eye scene.
>>
>>17098447

The publisher's license for the game expired and they didn't renew it. Few digital copies of this game exist, and they're damn expensive to trade for.

Exactly. Dead Space 2 showed us a Necromorph outbreak unfold from start to finish, which gave the gameplay some new perspective and dynamic set pieces.

Call of Cthulhu DKOTE has already been mentioned, but I can definitely recommend that to /x/.
Also Second Sight was pretty good but idk if it's as more or less unknown. It has a similar atmosphere and progression as Call of Cthulhu.

I'm about to finish Corpse Party: Book Of Shadows tonight, which is pretty damn disappointing compared to the first game (it has parts storywise that I've enjoyed though), but I really like how Corpse Party is gory, but not explicit with it. It leaves up to your to imagination and only gives you descriptions/sounds of what's going on.

Sylvio is great for people who like atmosphere over jumpscares. You investigate an abandoned park collecting EVPs to find out what happened.

I like Lovecraft. I think it's ridiculous to ignore someone's library of works for a fault in their character. You can hate the man but appreciate the works he's made. Being able to form an opinion is not that hard; I wish more people were capable of it.

The first dead space is fucked up and surprisingly didnt rely too much on jumpscares, theres something about being put in the shoes of what is essentially a blue collar worker aboard a huge spaceship using tools of the, or rather his trade to fend off things that were based on car crash victims, miscarriages and murder victims (im not kidding, look it up if you dont believe me)
