In 1994 my uncle died of cancer. It was sudden, nasty, and painful. I was just a kid. I come back from school for spring break and the tree I begged my parents not to cut down, even though it was rotten is in the front yard, strong and tall. Just like when I used to climb it. On the wall is a photo of me and my uncle and my dad at a fishing trip I know I never took, from 2002. I ask them about my uncles cancer, they tell me how they caught it early and were able to cut out most of his intestines to save him, back in 94.

When I left my dormroom that day everything up until that point was fine. I was a social drinker, but light for college. I never did and do not do drugs. When I realized I was missing hours I confided in my roommate that I thought I was going absolutely crazy. My roommate was a normal shy guy, but he got really different when I explained about the missing time. Very, VERY forceful. Almost scary in his assertiveness. He told me "Everything will be fine Anon, just go back and check again. I AM CERTAIN YOU ARE MISTAKEN." He scared the fuck out of me. I retraced my steps and wound up on time. My roommate had no recollection of us talking or him ever saying anything like that. I changed rooms shortly thereafter.

Yes and no. I've accepted that I'm in a different universe with more or less the same people, but I've rebuilt relationships here. I miss my parents there, but am glad to know my parents here. I wish I could just get a message back to my home universe, let them know I'm ok if there isn't a version of me there. I do understand what police are like where you are. While I've not lived there personally, I've been to and do work with a couple villages in Matabeleland. (Not a religious nut btw.)

Police are on a spectrum -- yours are horrific, mine in the US are terrible, but in a place like Iceland they're almost good guys.

Though my ultimate argument shapes up like this -- most of the western world (US included) didn't have police until about a hundred years ago. Modern policing was invented by horrible corporations doing cruel things to their employees in the US and Western Europe based on the model of the even crueler things they did to natives during colonization (you'll know all about this).

Generally speaking, violent crime follows the development of police forces, and generally crime increases as police retrench (e.g. US inner cities becoming war zones over the past century).

Police don't exist to protect or serve people, as you can no doubt attest. They exist to wield power, to preserve the state's authority by exercising its monopoly on violence.

Seems to me the lesson is that we shouldn't have police at all.
