I don't have one myself but the Skywave is apparently a very good radio and they recently released a new version that fixes some overloading issues it had. I'd say it's probably a good choice for a first shortwave radio.

I've heard good stuff about the regular CC Radio, desk radios with good audio quality and signal reception, but I'm not interested in AM DXing so I've never considered picking one up. Apparently they're coming out with a version at the end of the month that has shortwave bands.
