LaVey and all his followers are pitied for folly rather than condemned for evil as far as the Vatican is concerned. That's because say what you like about the Holy See, it employs literate people who've seen all the scams.
They know LaVey was just peddling Ayn Rand with some spoopy/metal add-ons.

LaVey was slyly parodying the Christian church by taking everything he observed in it and applying it to the diametric opposite of its ideology. A lot of what he preached and demonstrated were inversions of what Christians and those of other organized religions took for granted in their own doctrines. It's really hilarious when you think about it, lying somewhere between genius and stupid.
