Considered a parlor trick which is no longer attempted now that seances are no longer all the rage and technology and critical thinking (thanks to scientific advancement) has stopped people from "playing along". Nowadays if someone saw an ectoplasm stunt going on during a seance they would probably reach out and grab the cheesecloth like snatching a fake beard off Santa. It's one thing for that to happen during the era of original flash photography, it's another in an era where everyone has cell phones recording video.

There was a great paranormal movie about 5-10 years back that featured ectoplasm in a few scenes, I'm trying to remember the name. I'm sure it will come to me.

Ghost hunters have caught something similar to ectoplasm (supposedly) once or twice but it really looks more like small forms of light rather than white cloth or thick white smoke.
