Aside from Avast which I hear is not so good these days.

All antiviruses are basically shitty at best. Some are shittier when they add a bunch of bloat you don't need. I use MSE because it does what I want from an antivirus without overstepping it's bounds.
If you're serious about keeping viruses off your pc I would suggest using Sandboxie. Run your browser in a sandbox. The next strongest thing you can get is to run it in a VM but that type of security isn't worth the hassle of setting up and sucking up your cpu resources just for that type of security.

I use ESET NOD 32. I'm happy with it.
1. It doesn't slow down my system.
2. It has caught infections missed by Trend Micro and Kaspersky.
Most people don't actually need one. If you've got Windows 7 and up the built in firewall and protection software works fine.
Combine that with safe browsing habits, using addons like Noscript, and you shouldn't have any issues.

I did a review for Avira some weeks ago:

Ubuntu

So did I:
Viruses:
- pop up adverts while you're trying to do stuff
- run weird processes at weird times doing weird things
- constantly harass you for your credit card details
- try to change your homepage
- install weird browser extensions without asking
- tries to install a bunch of other viruses
Avira Free:
- pops up adverts while you're trying to do stuff
- runs weird processes at weird times doing weird things
- constantly harasses you for your credit card details
- tries to change your homepage
- installs weird browser extensions without asking
- tries to install a bunch of other shit like "Avira VM security" and "Avira mail scanner".

(I suspected the reason VMWare started running like crap was Avira trying to scan the entire hard disk every time the VM accessed it, but it's nice to see confirmation).
Adblock.
I torrent shit all the time and have never ran into any issues.

Even with their popup ads, Avast Free is the best antivirus of the bunch, imo. After upgrading to Windows 10, I abandoned it for the built-in Windows Defender. I run Malwarebytes Pro (antimalware, not antivirus) alongside it.
For Chrome i use an adblock/javascript/tracker blocker hybrid called uBlock Origin. I found this gem after I learned the developer of 'Adblock' sold his company to an unknown buyer. Fuck that.

the Adblock extension only works on the web browser anon

Linux. When I'm on Windoze I just run MSE and Common Sense 2017.

>1 Format your PC (Delete your old viruses)
>2 Install Virtualbox
>3 Install an OS (Windows/Linux/BSD) in it
>4 Make a copy of the clean virtual machine image before using it
>5 Use the VM for your porn/warez browsing needs (Don't use the same one for banking/social media/work)
>6 Once it gets gunked up, delete it and make a quick copy of your earlier clean image
The only way to have safe sex is to have a physical barrier between you and the whore sites that's discarded regularly
