Watch Serial Experiments Lain which is by the same director and written by the same scriptwriter but is probably the best thing they worked on. He also worked on the anime Kino's Journey which is pretty good and the scriptwriter worked on loads of good stuff and I'd also say better than Ghost Hound. If you liked other aspects like the music, character designs or whatever, then just look into the staff of the show and check what they worked on.

Also, pic related is a chart with stuff that you might like. Definitely check out the three top titles on the list, they're kind of must watches.

Not really, honestly Ryuutaro Nakamura isn't that great of a director. You can see that Ueda had a huge influence on his projects. They all have a lot of similaries, and the directors he hired for them never created anything on a similar level without him.
