I would say Avast is the best free option.
Have been using it for about 8 years.
Avast Kaspersky and F-Secure are the only 3 serious antivirus providers on the market today

I concur. For a while, I was running an arms race between AVG, Avast and Avira; every time one of them pissed me off, I would cycle in the next. Avast has been going strong for a few years now.

One more vote for Avast.
I've been using Avira, ever since having AVG became more awful than actually having a virus.
It's pretty good:
- Doesn't come with its own stupid firewall
- Stays out the way, doesn't pop up a load of annoying shit
- Hasn't locked me out of my entire Visual Studio repository yet

This, a million times this. If your computer is running really slow, messes with your browser settings, constantly tries to grab your credit card details, and spams popups all over the place, either it's got a virus or it's got a free antivirus.
