I recently moved into college and I noticed they have a policy against "transferring of illegal files over the school's networks". Obviously, that means no piracy allowed. Though how they find whether people take part in this is a mystery, I'd rather play it safe than get kicked out of school because I don't want to buy a DVD.
If they really do have some way to track whether I'm torrenting or whatever, a VPN should be at least able to stop them from knowing who's doing it (or something like that; my knowledge of VPNs is very limited). Where can I find them though?
Most of the ones I've found online cost money, and college students aren't the most financially gifted of people, so I'd prefer to use a free one. Do free VPNs even exist?

they do, google it faggot

But which one should I choose? Which VPN service is actually good? Are they all good? Why are some paid and others "free"?
>>
>>376227
You might want to ask around before you drop coin on a VPN. If Hulu/Netflix/etc block VPNs (which can disguise your location), then somebody at your university may too.

>>376225
>illegal files
Or you could just not, you know, steal shit.

No, I checked. This one VPN I've used for my phone works fine on the college wifi, so I'm assuming a VPN should be fine on PC too. Pic related.
>You might want to ask around before you drop coin on a VPN
Are you implying that buying a VPN is pretty much the only option?

>Or you could just not, you know, steal shit.
Nah.
>>
So there's openvpn, but it's pretty shit a lot of the time. What I would recommend is switching between tunnelbear and other free limited vpns.
The Opera browser has a free GOOD vpn, but it's not gonna help with torrents
>>
>>376225
if you use a VPN then all they can tell is that you're sending encrypted data to and from your VPN provider, they can't see what's inside

Is the whole rule bogus then? If they can't know what data I'm sending/receiving does it just not matter what I do on their wifi anyway? Can I go ahead and torrent worry-free?

Or do I just suck at reading comprehension and you're only talking about my computer + VPN?
>>
>>376309
the rule isn't bogus
the rule is there so your college doesn't have to deal with copyright love letters because of retard students who torrent game of thrones without vpn
>>
>>376309
and yes i'm only talking about using vpn
if you don't use a VPN then they know you're torrenting because you're sending all the torrent traffic through the internet connection that THEY own
>>
>>376309
If they don't have any rule against using a VPN then use one, you're good. But if they say using a VPN is against the rules then it's against the rules.

Ah, okay. So a VPN is definitely needed then.
>>376315
I just read over the rules for acceptable use again, and it says nothing about/against VPNs, so I'm good on that front.

Back to the topic at hand then: Where can I find good (free) VPN services?
>>376248 suggested tunnelbear and openvpn. Are these any good? Are there more like them? Is there a catch that makes them "free" rather than truly free?
>>
>>376322
there exists no such thing as a good free vpn, if you want to use it for torrenting
resign yourself for playing $5/month for your animus

Damn. What about mediocre free VPNs? Halfway decent ones? Occasionally not terrible ones?
If what you said is true, what paid VPNs would you recommend?
>>
>>376330
i've seen privateinternetaccess recommended a lot
looking at the site now it's actually only $40 if you pay for a whole year, which comes out to 3.33/month

Hm, I guess that seems pretty good. A lot less than I thought a good vpn would cost.
Is there any VPN info/protip that I should know before I get into it or is it a fairly straightforward process?
