So I'm old as all hell and going back to college and I have no idea what I'm doing.
(4x^2y)(5xy^4)^3
How the fuck do I simplify this? Do I foil? Do I just distribute the exponent and then combine like terms? I have no idea what's going on.
first distribute the exponent by multiplying each exponent in 5xy^3 by 3 which gives you:
(5^3)(x^3)(y^4*3) or 125(x^3)y^12 when simplified
now you have 4x^2y * 125(x^3)y^12 and you just need to multiply them
depending on whether 4x^2y is interpreted as 4x^(2y) or 4(x^2)y you'll get either:
500(x^(2y+3))y^12 or 500(x^5)y^13
