I have an i5 7500, Asus gtx 1060 ROG STRIX, 250gb ssd and 1TB hdd. Considering purchasing a 24" 1080p 144hz monitor but will that go down smoothly or am i making a mistake and going overkill?

is your current display 1080p and are you getting 60+fps?

depends how you use it. Your 1060 should run about 60 fps on high/ultra.
You should take it if you plan to play csgo or games at low to get their potential.
However, high frequency monitors give better look even on desktop applications.
It also depends on the price of that monitor
