After installing a few mods (new textures/Nevada skies/some skin mod/new quests), New Vegas crashes randomly (black screen, FNV.exe has stopped working, close program). It sometimes happens at close intervals but most of the time it's once every two hours or so. I don't mind it that much given that I do a ton of quicksaves and launching the game is quick. But will it damage my computer/game in any way? (Steam version)

If it's just fnv.exe dying then no. The OS protects the computer from processes doing stupid things; all it can do in a worst case is delete all your files (but not any other user's and not the OS).

>delete all your files
Which ones? Game-related ones? In that case I assume I'd just lose my saves and the game content which I can always re-upload. If it messes with other computer files though..

It's unlikely to ever do that to any of them.
But if it decides it's going to, it can delete any and all of your files (i.e. the files you, the user, created), and the OS won't stop it.
This is why ransomware is so popular and effective: you don't need to explot the OS because you already have permission to encrypt everything that's worth paying for.

I don't feel like taking the risk. What would you recommend?

- Stop worrying
- love the bomb
- go buy an external drive, set up a system image backup, and actually do it
Windows Backup only stores the changes when you back up to a non-network drive (like an external hard drive), so you can store dozens of backups on the same drive. You can get individual files out the backup by mounting it, or if your computer won't even boot, you can restore it in a few clicks by booting off a Windows installer.
