I have a barcode scanner that connects with usb. The program that is supposed to be used to configure it only works with com ports.
usb -> ??? -> com port 1
The only thing I can seem to find is to redirect com ports or physical usb adapters.
Just borrow an old XP machine from a friend who still has one.

check your motherboard manual - if it is somewhat old it may still have COM headers even if it doesn't have the ports in the backplate.
all my usb comm ports show up in the device manager. it shows what com port was assigned. then i just set the programs to use those ports.

The scanner will appear as a USB serial device, because a serial device is what all the applications expect, and they're hardly going to all rewrite themselves for one snowflake USB scanner.
Plug it in, see what COM port appears, and in your program select that.
