When I connect my computer to a power outlet, 70% of the time it makes a loud electrical buzzing noise and then won't turn on.

I've been unplugging it at the outlet, wiggling the power connector a bit, then plugging it back in and 30% of the time it works and I can use my computer just fine.

Also, I'm an idiot.

What should I do?

buzzing sounds probably arcing so don't plug it in anymore (high chance of starting fire) replace wall outlet and also buy new power cable
>>
OP, have you tried a different outlet?

If the problem goes away then get someone who is good at electrical wiring to fix that shit.

The buzzing is at the computer's power connector, not the wall outlet.

Thanks for the help though. I was just going to buy a new PSU.

Sounds like you may have a bad ground, have a reverse polarity (hot and neutral) or both. If you have a multimeter, you can check this or buy a dedicated outlet checker to see if everything is good.

always plug your pc and monitor into a surge strip

Switch modes don't give a crap about ground, and don't give a crap about polarity.

I mean, duh, one of the first components is a big fuck off transformer.

Perhaps you should google electrostatic potential, maybe bone up on the highschool physics a bit more?

Clearly it's the power connector. Obviously replace the lead and the PSU at the same time, or the old lead will damage your new connector.

Wooooooooooooo.
I for a fact know that Facebook use a couple of million surge strips.

OP here, bought the new PSU and threw out the old one + all its cables.

Everything is working smoothly now.

Thanks.
