Try Little Witch Academia on Netflix- it's effectively animated Harry Potter, and they do not waste that goldmine of a premise.

As a pretentious connisour myself i recommend going on MAL and finding something from the top anime list that resonates with you, based on poster or synopsis. But id you're too lazy id say check out Mob Psycho 100, for a great recent example of how interesting anime can be

No Madoka Magica yet? That was my first, and I was a huge cynic towards anime initially
