Madoka Magica is good. Your cousin has some refined tastes, but I think Legend of Galactic Heroes will be boring to most audiences.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is good, but ignore the community behind it. Kino no Tabi is also good, although somewhat dated by now.

I don't know why you'd want to be a weeaboo but I'd suggest just going to anichart.net and picking something that's running this season and going with it. Summer seasons are usually shit compared to fall and winter, but you might find something you like.

I can recommend you to watch a couple movies like ghost in the shell 1 and 2, Patlabor 1 and 2, Jin Roh, Akira, everything done by Ghibly, everything done by Gainax, Kill la Kill, Little Witch Academia, Bakemonogatari season 1, One Punch Man, the list could go on
If you'll like some of these recs just check out what other works did the directors/ key animators do, and just keep on exploring, forming your own taste

even if some of them are not complete trash, like My Hero Academia, the chances that you'll accidentally dtumble on something not repulsive are jsut waaay too low

Toriko is another fancy shounen, actually comes from the makers of Dragon ball.

My advice to OP is to just watch anime and don't interact with the community, because the more you interact with the community the more you will be misled by them and the more you will come to hate anime, even anime you've never seen and don't know anything about. It's not even unusual to see someone go "man anime is so fucking shit now, it was so awesome in the past, what went wrong" and then you look at their MAL profile and they've seen 20 anime.
