One VERY important thing to remember about the deep web and dark web is that they are NOT the same thing. The dark web is part of the deep web, but the dark web and the deep web are not synonymous.
The deep web is essentially what isn't available to the public eye, or in other words, the "behind the scenes" of the internet.
Personal information, deleted videos/pictures and all of that stuff can be found on the deep web, but since the sheer quantity of things there is utterly overwhelming, it would be rather impractical to search for something.
Go onto Facebook/Twitter/whatever you have. Go to the "Edit your profile/info" section. Congrats, you're in the deep web! This is what I mean by "not available to the public eye". Since only you or somebody who holds the password can access it, it's part of the deep web. Because it's a private link, you can't go into the deep web and try to access it. Think of it as one of those shark cages deep-sea divers use. The shark (deep-web user) can swim around in the water (deep-web), but cannot access the person (in this scenario, you) in the cage, unless the cage itself (the private link) is very weak (unreliable/dodgy).
Apparently (I'm sourcing Tor for this), multi-million deals take place in the deep web, too, as doing it on the surface web could result in breaches and millions of lost dollars gone to the hackers.
The deep web is far from illegal; the dark web is where the shady and illegal stuff takes place.
Most of it is used for kiddie porn, but there are places such as silk road where drug trade, human trafficking, 'hitmen-for-hire' (in quotations, since it hasn't been confirmed that they're out there), rape and snuff films are held. This is what most people assume the deep web is.
Tor is what people use to access it. It's also the only way to access .onion sites, which is where a lot of the deep/dark web sites are held.
Cont? Reached the word limit.

I'd argue that a private facebook profile is still on the clear net because spiders can still find it and link back to it on search engines regardless of profile status.
A dark web site would be one that isn't linked to on any clear net website but doesn't require special routing (ala tor) to access.
