When you first install Windows it writes data to some locations that it does not want you to move. Stuff like the pagefile and hibernation file. Disk defragmentation won't move them.

When you try to shrink C: it will stop when it reaches one of these files. In the pic attached, they are the brown Excluded blocks.

The only way to overcome this is with a fresh Windows installation - during setup you create a partition for Windows and restrict the size. Windows will create its Excluded files inside that partition and later you can either leave the partition alone or make the partition larger.

It should.

>>if i make the unallocated space the new partition and install ubuntu on that drive will it work?

Yes. Install Ubuntu onto the partition with the unallocated space.

Yes, each operating system needs its own partition on the root drive. I would suggest giving ubuntu it's own partition at the end instead of in the middle. 10 or 20GB should be more than enough space for it.

If I click continue what will happen?
Will there be any memory loss?

Hard to answer your question without seeing what you did before.
>>
>>328202
I made the 30 GB unallocated space a new drive F: you can see the unallocated space in the OP pic.
>>
>>328157
How do I go about it ?
>>
>>328154
do shrinking and creating new partition with live cd/usb
windows can't do shit
>>
>>328250
I did that, it didn't work, fucked up my laptop, reinstalling Windows, will clean the laptop.
>>
>>328157
My laptop has 500 gb memory, how much memory should i give the C: partition?
>>
>>328154
Why didn't you just install it in a VM or a filesystem image you could mount with md or dm?

No it's not: the very program you posted can shift then at boot-time.
>>
>>328278
I tried it,virtual box does not work on my laptop, that's why.
>>
>>328284
Even if you don't have VT, you can still boot a file as your host OS: https://superuser.com/questions/599785/can-i-make-syslinux-load-a-root-fs-from-an-image-file-on-an-ntfs-partition

If you're still there and waiting, it depends on how much shit you're going to install after Windows is set up. The minimum size I would recommend is 30GB. You'll need all that room for the updates. How much more room you need after that depends on what you're going to add - games, photo or video editing software, personal movie and picture saves, etc. If this is just going to be a Facebook machine.you should be able to give it 35-40GB and forget about it.

>>No it's not: the very program you posted can shift then at boot-time.

It's been a few years since I last tried that and it failed. If Perfectdisk found a way to do it, it's news to me.

All you do is rightclick-->offline defragment-->reboot now. It's always been able to do it.

Anyhoo, partitioning your drive is retarded, just make a file for the root filesystem and then install into it. You don't even have to mess with grub: winboot can load syslinux.
