For longer or larger GIFs, it's actually more memory-efficient on systems with a hardware VP8 decoder.
In the absence of a hardware GIF decoder, the general approach appears to be to fully decode the GIF then ramblast it. Which can lead to hilarious memory usage for simple images that GIF compresses really want well. By comparison VP8 is held in memory encoded, and streamed to the framebuffer through the decoder, for constant memory usage.
