That did occur to me, but trial and error sort of feels like cheating. There must be some logical way to work it out.

Whenever it gets to this point, I don't know a better option than 50-50 and roll with it.
I'd be interested in finding a better strategy too.

I find it's quickest to consider one number. In this board, 8 gets the fastest check.
