If you want mechs then the standard recommendation is probably Gundam, but it's an ancient franchise with some continuity between series and not really something you can just jump into at random. Some mech series I enjoyed were Eureka Seven and Gunbuster.

Also, you can watch anime while still maintaining a normalfag life, I have friends who do it, but they're massive casuals. In this case casual is defined by not having seen a lot of series, and the series they see are all entry level. It's not really bad being casual, but it means you won't get on well with the otaku-types or seasonal spree watchers (people who pick up 20+ new anime every season). For the record, /a/ is full of both otaku-types and seasonal watchers, and that's why they don't like recommendation threads or have much patience for newbies, because all they really talk about is stuff that newbies haven't seen and thus can't contribute to discussions.

Some kinda off the beaten path stuff can be worth it. Arakawa Under the Bridge is cool, Boku no Hero Academia has some cool fight scenes but is also pretty normalfag. I just watch stuff that is currently airing so I don't turn into a weeb by limiting myself but I mean yeah. Also there's Nanana's Buried Treaure, but a lot of people hate it so idk, maybe Golden Time if you want some solid romance without shitty Harem. Honestly just run through like kissanime's anime pages sorted by popularity starting at page 3 or so and you can find good stuff pretty easily, that's how I used to find stuff.

If you have a hard on for mechs but wanna find somethin different, Hajime no ippo is a good start. Its pretty old but still fuckin gold desu. It has some of my favorite characters and fight scenes.

Something to start with. Anime isn't something esoteric. Just explore and when you encounter something you might like, consider trying it.
There are several recommendation charts of varying qualities floating around.
Don't trust them blindly, but use them as something to look for stuff.
