I just open them in VLC. It's a pain but at least it works.

Can you install firefox on iphones? Idk how locked down their market is but it seems like it'd be available, and ff on android can play them. Not very well but it's gotta be better than safari

There's one called merlin that has it's own browser and plays webms in it. It's only for iPhones though, no iPad version.
