Haibane Renmei is probably what you're looking for. It's a beautiful anime made by the people behind Lain and Texhnolyze (Yasuyuki Ueda and Yoshitoshi ABe) and with a soundtrack by the guy that made the OST for Shadow of the Colossus. What's not to love?

PS: The last scene of the first episode is my favourite scene ever.
