How does adding 1 into the parentheses change -2 to +2?

the 1 goes inside the parenthesis and turns into a 4.(since 4*.25 =1) When combined with -2, the result is + 2

-2 + 4 = +2

basically, he factorises 1/4 out of the 1, making it 4 * 1/4, and because both 4 and (x^8-2+1/x^8) are multiplied by 1/4, he can just factorise 1/4 out of both of those terms, allowing him to write the expression as 1/4 * (+4 + x^8 - 2 + 1/x^8), notice how there's a +4 term and a -2 two term inside the brackets? We can simplify the expression by adding them together which is 4-2=2. This simplifies the expression from

1/4 * (+4 + x^8 - 2 + 1/x^8) -> 1/4 * (x^8 +2 + 1/x^8)
