Depends. Do you want it more story-driven or just pure cheese and action? For the former, either read the manga or watch the TV series, for the latter watch the 1986 OVA.

One thing, however: if gore is important to you, skip watching the anime entirely and go straight for the manga. The OVA is censored to the point of being unwatchable (rainbow filters and screen changing color constantly whenever there's violence happening on the screen to hide the blood and gore), and the TV version has white blood and no gore at all.
