there is no sound going through it and when i use the sound recorder nothing picks up

either the recording volume is 0 or muted, open the settings
that "device" will capture anything played through the sound card jack, unless you are using crap hdmi, then you are out of luck

Just download OBS, put the file into an editing software, and delete the visual file
