What feature did you use to do this in photoshop?

How did you changed white values into transparency in some areas. Did you use a layer mask exclusively for the blood? After deleting the background with a selection?

thanks, guys. just started learning, looked up quite a few tutorials, but the only way i'm aware of is to paste an inverted black and white picture into a transparency mask. black and white gradient becomes transparency. but this is very unintuitive and requires a lot of screwing around with color balance and curves so the mask gradient is correct for each color. copy pasting from a separate layer each time. wasn't sure if there was a simple feature for this, i'll have to check out gimp as well
